    I'm fairly happy with the DVDs I've ripped into VCDs. The quality is pretty decent. The only thing I don't like is the blockiness that shows up mainly on dark or wooden walls. Outdoor scenes are great. I'd like to keep it VCD compliant. I've read around and I think it's called DTC block. Other than that they are fine. I'm using DVDx to TMPGenc. Is there a way to use one of the filters in TMPGenc to get rid of these blocks? Does using the filters in TMPGenc slow encoding time? I've read all the guides I can find, but none of these guides goes in depth on the filters. TMPGenc could really use a good help file. Anyone know where I can find a more in depth guide on these filters? Don't ask me to use filters in avisynth, as avisynth completly confuses me.
    Thanks so much,
    Tim

    Unfortunately some artifact are unavoidable at low bit rates i.e. vcd, though filters may help u problem they cause problems of their own & will increase encodeing time u tried svcd or cvd these give alot better results in my opinion

    Encoding with 2-Pass (VBR) can effectively remove blocks.

    Hey puertorican 138:
    Can you not soften the block noise under the quantize matrix tab?

    he said he wants to keep it compliant, so VBR is out. altering the Q matrix to use the kwag template value would help, but i don't know if VCD spec has a limit on GOP length, i know DVD is set at 15(pal) and 18(ntsc) is VCD set?

  7. @flaninacupboard,
    The New KVCD BETA-1a "Notch" Q. Matrix should help, even with a standard CBR VCD. It will reduce many of the visible DCT blocks seen on dark areas of the picture.

    @puertorican138,
    Soften block noise doesn't work correctly in any version of TMPEG above 2.x. The higher you increase the intra block and non-intra block numbers, the sharper the edge of the blocks, and the more visible they are. If you leave it unchecked, it produces a more natural and softer effect. The opposite as advertized
