anyone know any good settings for anime. I try high bitrates but it becomes extremely choppy once the sound kicks in, and when it work it still get blocky beyond recognition during more graphic intensive scenes.....i only have intentions for putting in 2 1/2 hour episodes per vcd.....any tweaks, settings, templates etc.... would be EXTREMELY appreciated
thanks alot
Dan

welcome to anime dvd ripping. it's a bitch and a half.
the problem with ripping anime vs regular film dvds is that 1) anime has very very high motion scenes, more than most regular movies 2) they're almost always fullscreen, so blockiness is more visible. if it was 2.35:1 widescreen like lots of movies, that'd be quite nice, but alas, no. 3) even tho they only "draw" 24fps, instead of being like most dvd companies who keep it 23.976fps and add rff flags for 3:2 pulldown on playback, they interlace it themselves. which makes life like hell.
to get good quality anime rips, you'll very likely have to do an inverse telecine. the tmpgenc's auto ivtc is quite good, and anything it misses is pretty easy to fix up manually after. if you're not familiar with ivtc, check out doom9.net's guides. -
Should be noted for probably 99% of Anime DVD's, if you run the movie thru DVD2AVI under "Forced FILM" field operation, and ignore the picture type window flashing "NTSC! NO! FILM!", chances are very good you will come out with a good VCD encode (23.976) or SVCD encode (23.976 with pulldown applied later).
I do understand there are some "problem" movie out there, but I have found that for me, doing "FILM" rate from the project file works, every time.
If you have a problem with a movie here and there, do an auto IVTC in TMPGEnc. But try the FILM mode first. -
thanks alot for your help on the dvd ripping end its worked out well. Now i have a specific question......i have a few episodes that i have d/l'ed off various services and each run at about 23 min a piece (cowboy bebop, ranma 1/2, gundam, one piece etc...) and i have attempted to put on episode at VERY high bitrate onto one disc and record onto tape, but with high bitrates the movie is extremely skippy and just cant be viewed, so im making the compromise of putting two eipsodes onto a disc, seeing as how they can retain a fairly high bitrate but what i would like to know is between trial and error or what you may have heard what is the most comfortable bitrate (video as well as audio) for two episodes that will not lose alot of quality being recorded into an sp mode tape.....my dvd player has extremly picky tastes and these particular disks dont come cheap so im hoping to do a constrant string of burn-erase-burn-erase deal........thanks for any tips and thanks again for the dvd ripping answers!
