well - you should have little problem

open tmpgenc -> options-> environmental sttting-> vfapi plug-in settings and see if cyberlink mpeg2 decoder is listed and checked

if it is not - re-install powerdvd and tmpgenc and try again

It will play the mpeg, but not the m2v file by itself.I expect this is normal.
I have tmpge 2.59,and 2.510 and they both act the same.I thought the m2v plugin needs to be installed,or is that installed with powerdvd?
    Thanks again.

the m2v file is a mpeg file -- just an unmux'd one ...

i have to rename m2v file to .mpg to get them to play in windvd - maybe the same ...

anyway you say you cant play the m2v file in powerdvd and you should always be able to -- so there is a problem w/ the file ..

Well i'm at a loss,I had everything running fine before the crash, and now?
I know i'm missing a codec of some sort.I tried another short Mpeg2 movie with my ati,and it plays in powerdvd, but tmpge says it cannot open it or file unsupported.A codec problem i believe.
Anyone out there run into the same problem.
    Thanks brad

  10. I was having a similar problem. Just downloaded the TMPGEnc Plus eval yesterday, it worked on first try encoding a DV source file. But when I tried converting a MPEG2, I kept having problems. Sometimes I would get the "Can't open..." message, sometimes it would just hang during the encode. It would strip out the wav, do the lame encode, but hang when it started on the video. The elapsed time would only update every 30 seconds, and task manager said it wasn't responding. Eventually the remaining time came up as 791 hours, so I killed it.

These two problems kept happening, with several different MPEG2 files. All were captures from my WinTV-PVR 250, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Anyway, I kept trying and finally got an encode to start. Strange.

So, I don't know what the deal is with this. Rest assured I'll be pounding on this a lot before I decide to shell out my $48. If it won't convert my PVR captures, it's not much good to me.

  11. I spoke too soon, none of my conversion attempts of MPEG2 files completed, they all crapped out after a couple hours of work. I decided to try TMPGEnc on another PC, never get past the "...can not open, or unsupported" message. TMPGEnc claims Cyberlink MPEG2 decoder is installed.

This is really starting to bug me. Glad I decided to try the trial version first at least. If anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it.

I had everything working fine until a computer crash, and since i have reformated and reloaded everything i can't run tmpeg properly.I'm sure i had the tmpgenc mpeg2 plugin from the tools section of this website. The link is now all jumbled,so i even download the Japanese language pack, but it is still an unrecognizable mess.I'm sure this is the missing link.
I don't want to have to buy another program,as i bought powerdvd for this purpose only, but it doesn't appear to work.

Thanks BJ M. That was it.Works great in 2.59,i will try in 2.510.
Two things.the copy of the plug in i had burnt to disk would not unzip properly, not sure why.The big question is why did i have to buy powerdvd when the mpg2 decoder didn't work anyway. The free Tmpgenc codec works fine.I guess i should of looked a little harder for the link, but i thought the tools section was the only place for it.
Thanks BJ M. I'm from Waterford Ont. just south of Brantford. You live in my old home town.

  16. I have m2v.vfp installed, though TMPGEnc says "The file can not be loaded". Don't know what to do about that. I finally got a MPEG-2 file to decode/re-encode, but I had to do the audio and video separate (else TMPGEnc would hang on the video portion). This was only after installing Nimo decode pack (didn't work with powerdvd installed), though I saw no visible change in TMPGEnc. But, now I went back to try to encode an AVI file from a DV camera (used to work) and now TMPGEnc gives me the "Can't open file" message. Argh!!!!

And this is on my PIII. On my Athlon (main) PC, it crashes several hours into a (AVI) encode with the dreaded "Read error occurred at address blah-hex of module "TMPGEnc.exe" with blah-hex2".

TMPGEnc is badly broken, at least in 2.510.49.157.

Try and set envirnmental settings-vfapi-directshow to a priority 4 or 5 and everything else 0 or 1 when opening an avi.You have to reverse the order with the mpeg2 plugin when opening mpeg2 files.I also found you have to de-multiplex the audio and video on an mpeg2 to open the video portion in Tmpgenc.
