ok i haven't encoded/captured a video file in about two years. recently i captured some tapes to my hard drive in mpg and avi format. what i 'd like to do is add some background music in different areas of the video files. how exactly would i do this? can it be done through tmpgenc or v-dub? i used to do this sort of stuff quite often, but can't remember exactly how, thank you.

sounds good. and vdub will allow me to place the mp3 file that i want to add anywhere in the video file right? or will i have to convert the mp3 to wav, then add it?

1) Do you want to replace the audio or add voice overs? Replacing the audio is easy (just de-mux and re-mux with new audio track in VDub). For voice over you'd have to de-mux, edit the wav (eg. w/ cooledit) then remux.
2) It's not really necessary to convert the mp3 to wave, however to be on the safe side I would. Some MP3s use VBR encoding which can cause sync problems when muxed with another VBR video file (or even CBR video files). -
thanks for the replies, it's all coming back to me. now i have to re-capture using vdub because i origionally captured with "showbiz" capturing software, which isn't compatible with vdub, and when i use it in tmpgenc there are horizontal lines where movement occurs (i think this is called interlacing, right?).
btw, i want to combine about 5 mp3 files together and add them to my video. what is the easiest way to do this?
thanks for you replies and patience, i will pick all this up sooner or later -
Most non-linear video editors will allow you to lay down additional audio tracks or replace an audio track. Ulead VideoStudio would be an inexpensive example, Adobe Premiere would be a more advanced/expensive example of a program that could do this.
