  1. I was wondering if anyone has been successful or found a way to turn off the copy protection schemes on the Panasonic DMR-HS2?
I have several VHS tapes of old that I would love to put on DVD but the DMR-HS2 just wont allow me to do that. I constantly get the message
"Copying of this material is not allowed"
Does anyone know of a device or a firmware mod that can assist in this?
    Thanks,

Thanks for the info. I actually have this item and although it works great on most, there are a couple of older VHS tapes that it will not allow the Panasonic DMR-HS2 to copy. I happen to know the builder and this is something that is an ongoing dilemma.

  4. I am curious even more now about how old the tape is
    and especially what movie.

    Is it before 1986?

Maybe not a solution but could you possibly try this
2 stage duplication out of curiousity

    Copy stage !
    Source TAPE --> dubbed TAPE

    Copy stage 2
    dubbed TAPE --> DVD-R

The movies are before 1986 and we have tried so many things without success. We tried what you suggested as well.

  6. How is it possible that the device above has worked for ANY of your VHS tapes at all? If it does CGMS and not Macrovision then how does it do any good on the VHS tapes?

  7. Ok, this has "bothered" me as well for copying VHS to the HS2, not copy-protected VHS, but Regualr VHS Videos.

I'm not sure how to tell if it's just a bad tape, or MAcrovision screwing things up.

Keep in mind this stuff was shot on an AV Camcorder in the 80s or recorded off of the TV and isn't avilable on DVD or even VHS for the most paert, I edit my VHS tapesand go to ut them on DVD and some work on one VCR and don't work on another, is this normal?

I have an old and a new Sony VCR and the older one records with minro problems, the enwer ne records with "Wavy" lines but plays the vdieo back fine. I don't get any "Error Messages" but the wavy lines disturb me, is this Macrovision wreacking havoc from VHS to DVD, or is it kjsut a bad tape?

I though Macrovision was only supposed to screw up DVD to VHS, not the other way around.

The video filter device does indeed remove CGMS and macrovision. That is not the problem. The problem is with old VHS tapes. At least some of mine which are out of sync. So they need to be cleaned up (some how?) to allow the video filter to pass the cleaner signal to the dvd recorder.

At the moment I only have 1 vcr. It is a govideo model. The one that can play and record 2 vhs tapes. So I have never been able to actually use 2 vcr like you mentioned above.

  11. Some tests I ran just to see what happens with my old tapes.

(all my copies so far had been non commercial off air tapes )

I used a JVC SVHS VCR model HR-S3600U
connected to panasonic dmr-e30s using S-Video.

No filters of any sort were used.

Taped a few seconds onto DVD-RAM from these few VHS Original tapes I own.

Magnetic Media Corp - 1980 Okay (video great for 22 year old tape)
    Trans World ??- 1980 okay
    warner brothers -1984 Okay
    Lightning Video - 1987 Okay
    Media - 1989 Okay 1987 - failed (expected opposite)
A few other 1990's tapes from small release studios recorded fine in the test.

A couple of other tapes copied but the resultant video was worse .

None of the tapes were major blockbusters but they are all old out of print
and good candidates for digital preservation.

I would like to try and get a copy of your tape to test it.
What tape is it, or at least what studio and year is it.

I had a couple of old vhs tapes that did not work. As of now there is only one that I have not successfully backed up. The tapes I had problems with were from the NBA series of playoffs from the 1980 championship to the 1984 championship series. These were all made by CBS FOX VIDEO SPORTS. The only one that I still can't copy is a music and concert vhs tape of the group New Edition. It is called New Edition Past and present. This was mad e by MCA MUSIC VIDEO. The year for this video is 1989.
So actually at this point I am quite content since out of over 1000 vhs tapes I am really only down to one that could not be copied as of yet. If I find a way to do it I will post it here. Take care!
