Is there a way to get pro logic when capturing to virtualdub? I'm assuming no but then I started wondering if you used a composite video cable instead of left and right rca cables. A composite video cable will support ac3 even, its what I use between my dvd player and ac3 tuner and I can't tell the difference between that and an optical cable. So is there a way to get pro logic from a pro logic source like laser disk?

I think your confusing either your cable names / the cables themselves or all of the above
video composite cables and
"rca" audio cables are the same type and construction
only the video is yellow
audio is red/white
digital audio is orange
Optical is audio only that does away with copper to have higher signal quality -
There is a video cable that supports ac3 sound, maybe I have the name of it wrong. But this still doesn't answer the question, is there a way to get pro logic sound from a pro logic source when capturing? Or can you only get stereo?

I may be wrong ( and frequently am
but was under the impression that pro logic was encoded 'in' with the stereo channels. So, if you are recording both channels, the pro logic signal will be preserved.

I know I am not getting pro logic, if anyone knows about this issue please speak up! I'm not getting pro logic like I do when I make VCD's or SVCD's, but I'm capturing not ripping a DVD to my drive, so I really want to know

Dolby Surround (Prologic) is encoded in the two-channel stereo, so it should be retained unless you drop the audio quality too much. Make sure you're capturing in stereo, make sure your source actually has Dolby Surround, make sure your player is set up for Prologic (I had to manually set it on my stereo), etc.
If you're referring to the Dolby Digital connector on the back of your DVD player, that would carry audio if you're capturing from a DVD player. Not that many sound cards have a connector for it, though, and I don't know of anything other than DVD players that uses it for output. -
your right sterno, my source in this case was not pro logic, I'm an idiot sometimes
