Have only has time tonight to burn a Data DVD of about 1gb of small files but had no problems.
PS: Both of the Buffer guages hit zero a few times! Did a verify on the data and it passed. Wont know untill I can produce a video to burn as a DVD-Video if both g and Nero are working as desired. -
I have flashed to 1.0g and see no visible improvements or added problems, yet. I must add that I have no problems and have never had any problems with with my 500a, banging on desk. I did get 2 riteks from a friend that were supposed to be 4x after using the media identifier I learned they are really only 2x so I still don't know if my drive will burn 4x yet.
Manufacture date of the drive is 28 October 2002 Version BA (whatever that is) -
what i am interested in, is whether or not the 1.0g firmware allows for 4x read of dvd-r movies or retail dvd discs, as opposed to the 2x that 1.0f allows. anyone know yet?

I have a friend that get almost 4x off of a DVD read only drive. Thinks its a Toshiba or Teak. If I get a chance today will run a test for you.
Also need to find some cheep test media at 4x. -
-BK- another few thoughs:
* Check IDE Drivers
* Check motherboard BIOS updates
* Check PSU has not gone bad (I'm using 350W Enermax)
An unrelated update could have caused the problems, I've been there before. I re-installed Windows and everything was OK. -

Just out of curiosity, have you installed DirectX 9? For some reason, everything worked swimingly for me until I put DX9 on my box. I was NEVER able to get the drive going at 4x with the VIA chipset, so I installed it on a new box which worked at 4x until I popped DX9 on (nothing else mind you, I tested it stage by stage) and viola... 2x after 2 mins.

Wow !!
I run XP with SP1 and DX9. I have noticed DVD9 rips max out at 2x. I guess 1.0g does not speed this up so, I think I'll pass on it for now -
Well, you know me. I had to update.
I put the file on my desktop. Re-booted into Safemode. Ran it and it upgraded from 1.0f to 1.0g with no problems. I rebooted after installation. I checked the ripping speed and unfortunately it still maxed out at ~2.0X.
No harm I guess. Hopefully I'll experience are some other benefits with this upgrade
