  1. When I am trying to play an AVI file my player (either WinMedia Player V9 or UltraPlayer V2.112) doesn't recognise the file type. Also when I am trying to convert it, it does the same. Should I be download/install DivX latest or something similar...Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

if you cant do anything with the file then your missing the proper codec to decompress it.

Download the nimo codec pac and install it, you may want to get the Xvid codec installed also.

I don't recomment downloading the Nimo Codec Package. It contains some spyware and other bad stuff.
