Hi,
Ofcourse I'm new at this, so need your help.
I have a digital camcorder which records on Mini Digital Video Cessatte which I can then trasfer to VHS using the Audio Video cable.
Is there a way I can transfer the video from the Mini Digital Cessatte to my PC instead of VHS.
Thanks in advance.

That's called capture. Look under howto capture (cam, dv).
Generally you connect from a firewire (i-link) connection from your camcorder to a firewire port on your pc. Use software, run the tape, and copy (capture) the digital dv to the pc.
I think that a VCD would provide disappointing quality from home dv source, so you might look at a high bitrate svcd instead. After all, you're not going to make anyone watch over an hour of your home video are you? -
Hi,
Thanks for the response. Since I'm new to this, I can still use further assistance. I'm not fimiliar with this FIREWIRE (I-LINK). Is this an additional hardware that I need to purchse ? Waht kind of cabling do I need with that to transfer teh video out form my camcorder?
Thanks

It may or may not come with a firewire cable that can connect to external firewire devices (such as a camcorder).
It is likely that your camcorder came with the cable, or you can buy one to suit from a shop that sells camcorders.
Important: Check that it can be hooked up to a PC in the Owner's Manual.
Check that it uses Firewire (also called i-link or IEEE1394).
Some camcorders connect by USB (firewire is not required if it uses USB).
What type of camcorder do you have? Make and model number? -
It's a Sahrp VLNZ100U. In the manual, it does say that it uses a DV Terminal (IEEE 1394) cable for editing.
Also, the Audio Video cable that I have to transfer my still photo's from the simm on to my PC, connects via the USB on my PC.
Do I still need the hardware or what I have should do it with some additional software ?

You can use the DVIO.exe program to download the video to your PC. It's free and easy to use. -
I recommend going with a retail box of pinnacle studios Ver 7 or 8. Most of the time you can even find the software bundled with a Firewire cable and a IEEE (or Firewire) PCI card.
I’ve been using studio 7, its real easy to use. The software controls your camcorder (neat trick) it allows you to copy your video to your pc in a few different ways.
For example it will atomically detect the end of a scene (such as when you turn your camcorder on and off) and make it real easy to edit.
You can do a lot of neat editing tricks to your video such as adding tittles, transitions effects, overlays, background music, and sound effects just to name a few.
It has a real good out put setting as well, where you can choose the different type of quality you want to out put to i.e. Vcd, Svcd, mpeg 2 DVD Real player ect….
Overall a good program for the novice.I know Everything about nothing, And Nothing about Everything.
