  1. OK, I have worked with TMPGEnc and VirtualDub so as to understand some of their basic features. I have captured a video file and need to clip it (with VirtualDub?), frameserve it with VirtualDub, and convert it to the final format with TMPGEnc. I have Pinnacle Studio 8, which I have used to identify exactly what to keep and what to throw away by using it's scene recognition and nice editing tools. However, it's conversion to other formats is both timeconsuming and problematic. (Even the vcd and svcd it produces are not played correctly or at all by many dvd players.) So, now I need to possibly tell VirtualDub what part of the mpeg file I want to keep and then frameserve. I either need to set VirtualDub's scene recognition to mimic the effectiveness of Studio 8 or I need to batch or script tell VirtualDub what to throw out; then frameserve. Any advice on the best way to accomplish this?

Also, what file type and compression should I be capturing from my ATI AIW? I am currently capturing at 352x480 mpeg2. However, maybe I should capture avi with MJPEG? I tried huffy, but I got no compression at all. Quickly filled a 4GB file with 10 minutes of video. And I have WinME, so that is a problem. Thanks in advance. God bless.

  2. Well there's a lot of things that you are saying/asking, but only a few points that make sense. In no real order:

    1) The 4GB file limit is a problem with FAT32. There is also a 2GB file limit on avi files (but most programs will open an AVI on any size). The only way around the 4GB fat32 file limit is to partitation a drive w/ NTFS. You can do this under win2k, winNT, or winXP (not ME; win95, win98 and winME are all fat32)

    2) You can find out how to frameserve from VDub to TMPGenc here:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm

    3) For best results, you should capture at the highest resolution and bitrate that your system supports. Then resize (to a lower resolution), lower the bitrate, add filters, etc. as needed. That means you should capture as either raw avi or with a 'lostless codec' like huffyuv.

But you say you need to get around the 4GB file limit. No problem. VDub can capture/spilt your files with it's spill system. I normally set it to spilt each file at 1.9GB (just in case I have software that doesn't like avi files bigger than 2GB). When you frameserve with VDub (or open the first file in the series) it loads all the rest. You can find out how to use the spill system here:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/faq#spillsystem

    4) So capture everything in VDub as raw avi or with huffy at max resolution and a highbitrate. Edit as needed, then frameserve to TMPGenc.

  3. I captured my video with Virtaldub as AVI 29.97fps 720x480. I am frameserving to TMPGE. No problems there. The problem is that it says it is going to take 74 HOURS to convert to MPGE2 using 2-Pass!! Why so long. Its only 109 minutes. Any suggestions?
