does anyone know a good way to fix corrupt mpeg2 files? i downloaded a file and its corrupt. its a huge file so i'm not going to download it again.
when i play it the audio stops half way.
i can't author the disc to a svcd because the software won't accept it.
i tried using tmpgenc to multiplex it again, and to cut it, but tmpgenc can't get past one part in the middle of the file (the same place where the audio stuffs up)
vcdgear can go through the whole file, and can make tmpgenc multiplex it fully, and vcdimager can build a svcd from the remultiplexed file, but then the resulting file and svcd have audio for only a few minutes at the start.
mpeg header corrector is no use for this because this isn't a header problem.
mpeg scissors can't open the file.
i haven't gotten around to trying m2-edit pro yet, but since the trial has a 29 second file time limitation it won't be much use for a 40min file. has anyone tried m2-edit?
so does anyone know of a good program to repair corrupt mpeg2 (and also mpeg1 would be nice)?

Not much you can do with mpeg 2 that you have not already tried. M2edit wont fix bad frames or corruption, nothing out there will.
The only way I can see is to work up to the problem, then past it. Probably quicker to download a different type, AVI is safer. -
ok, thanks for your help KingJohn
i know that i can't recover data that is gone, but i'd still like to be able to open the file and cut it. powerdvd can play it.
i've tried cutting around the bad parts, but tmpgenc can't even read past the bad part. there must be some program out there that can save the bit after the corruption.
i have had some success by manually going into the file with a hex editor and deleting the corrupt part... it's easy enough to do because its just a block of characters that look similar to a "y". that way tmpgenc can read past the bad point on the file, but this causes problems.
for mpeg-1, Cineplayer Editor is absolutely spectacular at coping with errors and rebuilding corrupt files, although it does have a few bugs. M1-Edit Pro is also another program that is very good at doing this task also, with better frame accuracy when there is corruption. They fill up the bad areas with blank parts, or skip over them when there is corruption. So my mpeg-1 problems are solved thansk to these 2 bits of software (although i can't afford to buy m1-edit pro so i'm limited to 29sec in that program).
tmpgenc is actually pretty hopeless at handling corrupt files come to think of it...
KJ, have u tried M2-edit Pro? Its one of those programs that costs several hundred dollars... or did u just want ot say that all programs can't recover data that is gone? M2-Edit Pro has the same mpeg-1 capabilities as M1-Edit Pro so i'm kinda hoping it can cut around the bad parts in an mpeg-2 file, just like it does with mpeg-1. -
I stopped using M2-Edit a while back when it produced the wrong bitrate for the output, at the time I did ask them what was wrong, they basically said that it did not and all other programs did
so don't use it anymore.
