  1. Hi all,
I know my question seem silly, but a friend of mine argues that one can burn a dvd disc from a cdwriter NOT from a dvd writer. Any comments are most welcomed.
    Thanks.

  2. Tell your friend if you rub a mellon on your jumper, it will stick to the wall, just like a balloon

You can COPY a DVD video onto a CD with loss of quality. Perhaps he's just a little confused

No, you can't burn a DVD-R/ DVD+R on a CD writer. But you can create a "movie DVD" on a CD-R with your CD writer, that your DVD player will (well, might...) recognize as a DVD, and try to play (which most players can't do with grace). See Mini-DVD!

your friend? or is it you don't want to sound stupid. like "i have a friend named ... Johnny... Table. and he has a problem."
it seems like everyday someone asks the exact same question. will it kill you to search a little? a dvd is NOT the same as a cd. different "laser." it cannot be done.

Yeah, DVD's use completely different lasers compared to CD's.

Sounds like a friend of mine who took a lot of convincing that minidiscs wouldn't play in a CD drive if you just cracked the case open... or similar for a Zipdisk in a floppy... or that changing the operating system or "hard disk" (ie the system box) could somehow make a dead monitor work.

    (sigh)

If it's not you in disguise, print up a fake mitnick-a-like court injunction banning them from computers for the next 5 years.

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

    miniDVD:

miniDVD is a DVD video written onto a CD-R(W) instead of a DVD disc. miniDVD is also sometimes called cDVD. A miniDVD only fits about 15 minutes of DVD quality video on a 650 MB CD-R(W). Not many DVD players will play miniDVD - see the DVD Players miniDVD list for compatible players.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

  8. Some people are also confused about the terminology used, or just don't know any better.

To burn a DVD as you suggest in the topoc of this discussion requires a DVD burner, quite obviously.

Copying a DVD, on the other hand, can be done to several different formats for example; VCD, SVCD, and DivX, which can be burned onto a CD with a CD burner.
