I'm starting out with a 700mb avi, which expands to 4.1gb with tmpgenc, using DVD template. I'm adding nothing to it. But because of overhead the mpeg2 file is too big for a 4.7gb DVD+R and cannot be burned. What is the upper limit of a mpeg2 file, without any menus, and other embellishments? And, does anyone know why it expands so much? Is there a best bitrate setting that will retain the visual quality of the original avi without the huge expansion?
Thanks for any info.

How are you authoring your DVD and in which authoring app. This can make a significant difference. I frequently take 4.30 GB DVD compliant Mpeg-2 files and author to DVD with no problems. Just a simple menu with a few chapter points. If you start using moving meus, background audio etc the size will increase. Or worse still, you are using Sonic Mydvd which insists on converting the audio to uncompressed PCM. Some other authoring apps will do this too unless you tell them to use mp2 audio.

Yes, I'm using MyDVD from Sonic. What do you use to make simple authoring with no menues, or just one button?

No you need to say "stopped using MYDVD"
Had it, to do what you want you have to convert your file down to about 3 gig's or less cause, YES MYDVD changes the audio to PCM.
So if you start out with a smaller file after it's converted (PCM) it will expand.
I find spruceup to be very good. -
Marco33 is right that SpruceUp is ideal for what you want, if you can find a copy as it is no longer sold. In terms of authoring apps you CAN buy, Ulead DVD moviefactory is supposed to be quite good and Ulead DVD Workshop if you want a few more bells and whistles. I also quite like Dazzle DVD complete but it can be a bit buggy on some systems.
Hope this helps
