what kind of noise is it ? is it a constant hum or whine ?

My DV camera creates a whine which can be heard on tape. I use Cool Edit to isolate the noise and remove it with excelent results.

    I use cool edit pro.

    In a nutshell:
Open your audio and find a bit where there is no other noise except the hum (the closer you can get to a pure sample of this the better). Select it and then do a noise reduction, clicking "get profile from selection" and then click 'Cancel'. Select the entire waveform and go back to noise reduction. The profile you created will still be there. Select OK and it will remove the humm for you.

If you can't get a pure sample you will have to fiddle around a bit to get one. The program is fairly easy to use and the helpfile is good.
