Hi, I hear people say that mpeg2 is better then mpeg1,
but if both are at the same bitrate (ex. 1725),
would the quality of both be the same?
so basically I'm asking, if I make an SVCD with a bitrate of 1725,
and a XVCD with a bitrate of 1725, would both be equal in quality?

At that bitrate....which I called the "demilitarized zone" both are about equal WITH SAME RESOLTUION..that is they key...352x240, edge goes to xVCD, 480x480 edge goes to SVCD...also depends on quality of encoder as well

they are diffrent mpeg1 is vcd and mpeg2 is svcd or maybe dvd (i think) nuff said

Incorrect, MPEG1 and MPEG2 are virtually the same compression given the same parameters (bitrate, resolution - especially resolution). MPEG2 allows multiplexing of many video and audio streams which allows for the multiple audio tracks found on SVCD and DVD, and the multiple angles found on some DVDs. MPEG2 also allows for some other broadcast-oriented improvements. In terms of encoding and image quality, however, they are more or less the same. At equivalent resolutions, between roughly 1500Kbps and 3000 Kpbs, the image quality will be identical. Beyond those ranges, there is subjective opinion that the two will produce somewhat more optimized results - MPEG2 at higher bitrates, MPEG1 at lower bitrates.

So does that mean that if I encode a SVCD at 480X480, with chapers and menu support, at a bitrate of 1725, it'd take up as much space as a VCD at 352X240 at the same bitrate?
and they'd also be the same in terms of picture quality?

No, did you read what I typed in big BOLD letters (even though I spelled it wrong, LOL)...taking up as much space, yes, assuming you did the VCD with chapters & menus as well...same quality, NO, again, they have to be the SAME BITRATE at the SAME RESOLUTION, so thus at equal bitrates at different resolutions, the mpeg-1 (VCD) should have better quality due to the lower resolution, more bits to allocate to per area....now, HOW MUCH different is purely subjective thing that ONLY YOU can judge whther or not it is acceptable to you.

It's not quite that simple if you account for the playback device. The lower resolution will have more bits per area, but it will also be stretched more than the higher resolution, which will result in greater "fuzziness" or blurring. If you play both at their correct resolution on a computer screen, the VCD will look better at the same bitrate, but on a TV, it will probably be a toss-up.

Mpeg-1 uses algoritms for low bit rates, and mpeg-2 uses algoritms best made for high bit rates. If you look at the graph of subjective video quality the mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 curves cross around 2Mb/s.

Here is some "good" reading on mpeg compression... http://www.coolstf.com/mpeg

I would classify that more as good reading about commercial video broadcasting.

That's news to me. So if I drop the resolution down to 160x120 will I have really really really really good quality?
