  1. Hi guys,

Im trying to change studio 8s capture codec as I belive the codec it uses to capture is the microsoft dv codec, this has a data rate of approx 3500kbs, I have the mainconcept dv codec installed on my machine and would like to use this to capture with as it apparently encodes at approx 5000 kbps, is this true and is this possible to choose another type of DV codec for capture ???

Any other help information on my issue would be much appriciated

    thanks

  2. When you're capturing DV from a digital camcorder, no codec is actually being used. The data has already been compressed in the camcorder -- it is simply copied to the computer and placed in a wrapper (i.e., AVI). No matter what capture codec is specified, the codec isn't actually used during capture.

But a great DV codec can make a big difference in rendering.

BTW, DV has a fixed datarate. Therefore the MainConcept DV Codec encodes at the same rate as any other DV codec. The MC Codec is able to produce better quality than other codecs, but that is due to the codec itself and not the datarate.

    Best regards,

@mark: Are you sure about that? I“m using the Canopus ADVC-50 and Studio 8 to capture, and the .avi files I wind up with are Microsoft DV-coded. Shouldn“t they be Canopus DV-coded, which is done in hardware by the ADVC-50 (since I capture from analogue sources)? I“ve been wondering about this for a while, since the Canopus-codec supposedly is much better than the MS-DV-codec. Maybe someone can clear this up?
