Right then. I downloaded a file from the internet - lets say that it's legal, but it's named:
"DVL-DADA.avi"
*Following the guide*
Now, I'm trying to convert it to VCD - This requires me to use Virtual Dub to make some WAV files, in order for it to be done properly.
However, Virtual Dub is unable to 'detect' the audio compression, and when I choose to play it, or try to encode it after selecting the relevant options (Full Processing Mode, No Compression (PCM), Conversion 44100hz), it gives me an error message:
VirtualDub Error
The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format
This is the file information, according to Virtual dub:

I can play the file in Sasami (My preferred DivX-XviD player), and I do hear sound, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Can anyone help? Do I need a codec?
Regards,
James Ellison

Ive had the same prob in the past with one movie with ac3 sound, and the only way I could rip out the sound was through TMPGenc. Load your movie into TMPGenc as normal but don't start encoding it. Then in TMP main window go to file - output to file - WAVE file, and save out the wave that way. Worked for me.
you know it's the anti-Midas touch when all you touch goes to shit.............. -
I just tried to load it up in TMPGenc, both with and without the wizard. It won't let me load the movie under 'audio source' :/
Anyone else got any other ideas? :/ -
You need an AC3 filter for TMPGEnc to work
http://www.moonlight.co.il/download.htm
Moonlight Odio Dekoda DirectShow® filter, binary (71,855 bytes, ZIP)
HTTP Download, U.S. Primary (it is recasting)
HTTP Download, U.S. Secondary <<<<<<<
HTTP Download, Russia
See this for AC3 save and convert.
KingJohns Guide AVI Audio -
When you're saving your wave file in virtualdub, use direct stream for both video and audio. Name the file whatever.ac3 and vd will add the .wav extension. Remove the .wav extension and you'll be left with the .ac3 extension. Use a decoding software (I LOVE Ac3Decoder-very simple) and you'll get a true .wav file.
In tmpgenc you'll need an xvid codec, and you'll need to change your VFAPI settings under options-environmental settings. There are several other posts telling you what to change. Add your .wav file for the audio portion and you should be fine. If I can do this successfully, anybody can! -
KingJohn & dobie: Thanks for all the help, I now have a nice *.wav file.
Like you said though, dobie, I'm finding it difficult to encode it to MPEG still (I'm getting an error) but I'm sure I'll find out how somewhere.
Cheers.
