You can NOT just copy a DVD to a recordable DVD like copy a CD Audio because most DVDs are both encrypted and many won't fit on a recordable DVD cause there are only 4.38 GB recordable DVD±R/Ws(called single layer DVD-5) while many newer DVD-Videos are on 8 GB DVDs(called dual layer DVD-9).

Methods to copy a DVD to recordable DVD±R/W:
    • If the source DVD-Video is under 4.38GB (called single layer DVD-5) you can pretty easy rip and copy it to one recordable DVD±R/W. No video quality loss and you will keep all the extra materials such as menus and trailers.
Recommended guide: DVD-5 to one recordable DVD using DVDDecrypter.
    • If the source DVD-Video is over 4.38GB(called dual layer DVD-9) you can reconvert it or/and remove extra material so it fits on one recordable DVD±R/W. You may lose some video quality and some extra materials.
Recommended guide: DVD-9 to one recordable DVD using DVDDecrypter to rip, DVD2ONE,InstantCopy,DVD95Copy or DVDShrink to convert.
    • If the source DVD-Video is over 4.38GB(called dual layer DVD-9) you can rip it and copy it to two recordable DVD±R/Ws. No video quality loss and you will keep all the extra materials.
Recommended guide: Use DVDXCopy to copy to two recordable DVDs.
But how do I check if the source DVD-Video is a dual layer DVD-9 or a single layer DVD-5?
DVD-9 discs are usually gold layered and DVD-5 discs silver layered but it is not always so. Most longer films(longer than 2 hours) are mainly on DVD-9. But to be sure use DVD Decrypter, read thisDVD-5 or DVD-9? guide.

  2. Would there be a situation where you can simply do a Disk Copy if the original movie in DVD-5?

I bought a kids DVD, "Baby Einstein: World Animals". I put into my drive and checked the file size. it was less than 4.5GB.

I opened Nero, selected DVD Copy, burnt on a DVD+RW. (No Ripping at all). Played the DVD+RW in my Pioneer DVD player. It just played as if it was original.

My question is how come I made a DVD+R without having to rip it? Could it be that source DVD was not encripted thats why I didnt have to rip it?

  3. well you answered your own question. its not encripted and thats why you were able to copy it.

  4. I would love to see a way to keep all the menus/extras AND be able to fit it onto a DVD-5, by transcoding the actual movie etc. I realize this is planned for future versions of DVD2ONE, but if anyone knows of a current way to do this, please point me in the direction.

There's a freeware program called Make-It-Easy that when used with DVD2ONE allows you to copy with menu/extras. I've used it to copy TV episode disks and it works. I tried it on a movie and it worked there also.
The problem with keeping menus is they take up space that would be better used in the video stream to improve video quality. I converted SWII but it has 780MB's of extras, that's 20% of a DVD-R's capacity.

  7. Hi, I`ve just tried my first back-up copy following the guide by baldrick using dvd encryptor and converted with dvd2one, brilliant guide and conversion with a more than better quality picture than expected, plus full 5.1 sound, so no complaints at all, I`m made up. but my one question is this, dvd-encryptor took the allotted time of 40 minutes, however dvd2one took one & a half hours, am I doing something wrong, remember that this is my first attempt with excellent results and if that`s how long it takes then so be it. my computer runs with a 1.7 gig processor, 20gig+60gig hard drive, and no clutter. any help will be appreciated, .ps has anyone tried DVDEcho 2.70 and was it any good.regards nipperlocko

  8. I too was curious about make-it-easy. From the screen shot it appears that it might be a tool that is a part of DVD2ONE, is this true?

Otherwise, I can't seem to find it.

Hi NIPPERLOCKO. You may have already tried this, but I noticed the ripping speed may depend on which DVD drive you use. I have a Pioneer DVR-105 DVD-R/RW (Master) which only rips at about 2-2.5x, but my Pioneer DVD-ROM (Slave) rips at about 7-12x depending on the condition of the DVD. I can rip a two hour movie in about 5-6 minutes using my DVD-ROM, where the burner takes considerably longer. Whichever one you used before, try the other and see if it's better.

I haven't used DVD2One yet, so I can't comment on your speed there other than to say that 256MB RAM is probably the low end of what you might want. I run 1GB. Also, make sure nothing else is running in the background. You can't be playing Counterstrike or Everquest while your doing this. Serioulsly, I close any open apps, disable the network and any unnecessary services and then just walk away from the PC while it's working.

Also, you said you have no clutter on your HD, so I take it you defrag regularly. But you didn't mention in your computer details what type of drives you have. The HD drive speed (5400 or 7200 RPM and/or Ultra DMA speed) will make a differnce as well as if you are ripping to the master or slave HD, depending on your controller, your OS and how you have your Pagefile set up. For more info on this you might search the forum for how to optimize your PC...

Your ripping speed is because the encryption is locked at 2x read speed by your firmware. There is a hacked firmware that allows full speed rips PLUS 2x burning on most 1x media. I'd ge it and flash your firmware with it.

  16. If you want to avoide using the Pc and own a standalone dvd recorder you could use your video or dvd player to playback and record on your dvd recorder. It's realtime but you can get an excellent recording.
You will need to get round the CGMS and macrovision protection but this can be bought for about Ł23 UK.

    Hope this Helps you all.

Then used IfoEdit and selected all the episodes and let it strip out what it wanted to.
    Then used DVD2One to convert.
    nero to burn.
Takes a little longer, bu it worked.[/i]

  21. I would 1st like to say this is a great site and I would like to donate but prefer using money orders rather than credit cards..is this possible?...if so...how.

next question: I went step by step on baldrick method of backing up a dvd to dvd-r. I was able to do it with no problem but it would not play in my panasonic DMR-E20. I find this confusing since the Memorex DVD-R I used for the backup are the same ones I use in my DMR-E20 when backing up T.V shows and playing them back. I am able to play movies from my DMR-E20 on my computer dvd player (sony DVD/cd DRU-510a) but am not able to play the movies, backed up from the computer, on my home DVD player (DMR-E20)...any suggestions

    Thnx in advance

  23. i use dvd shrink to backup dvd9 to dvd-r, its free, and easy to use and the new version will let you keep all the menu's and extras, i have backed up loads of films with it, but if it is a long film like lord of the rings the quality is reduced but still good

  25. How about this one. My DVD burner on my pc is a Sony DRU500a, and both my DVD player and DVD Recorder can play DVD-R/+R disks. However, Im trying to backup my set of Mighty Isis, and only the DVD Recorder recognizes the disks and plays them. The PC doesnt even recognize the disks in the drive, let alone play them, and the DVD player plays chaotically, jumping and sticking during scenes, sometimes not changing a scene and freezing for minutes before advancing 1 frame. Any suggestions on this oddity?

I have had several dvd's that acted this way.
Stoned Age was one of these dvds
The way I got around it is to make an image of the dvd with
UltraIso Note Making an image with dvddecryptor with
these troublesome disks did not work but making it with Ultriso did.
Once the image is made just mount it in deamon tools or
nero imagedrive either one will do then rerip the image with dvddecrptor
from your hd to your hd then transcode and burn or just burn if its
small enough to fit on a dvdr

    Hope this helps

    Hi.
Thanx to your excellent guide, I've been attempting to backup my first DVD. Used DVDDecrypter, no problem. Then DVD2One, again no problem. Problem came when I went to use CopytoDVD. It kept popping up an error like (I'm at work at the moment, so can't access home PC) "Error accessing hardware layer"?
Anyone any ideas what's going on? Any help appreciated.
    Thx
    Troll
PS It was a DVD9, if that makes any difference. I've also tried Nero (which I love and use for all other burning), but when I go to burn the image file (that's right, isn't it?) it says it should have an extension of *.NRG, which it doesn't??

  29. OK...I am having a really bad week with my two kids and wife sick and at the same time I have been trying to do a simple DVD9-DVD-R and it will not work.

method 1 that i tried. Downloaded dvd decrypter and bought retail version of Pinnacle Instant cd/DVD etc..vers 8. When I ripped to an ISO file, NG with IC8. When I try file mode in dvd decrypter it auto created a folder on my C drive called (i.e FINDINGNEMO) and inside that folder it had the VIDEO_TS and the AUDIO_TS files. But when I open IC8 and do a disk copy from HD to dvd+rw (I have an HP writer, only writes in plus) and choose the Nemo folder it say's that the Video_TS.IFO file can't be found. Now I'm not sure If some settings changed in my dvd decrypter but I sware when I first tried this there was a .IFO file. (keep in mind I went through about 8 blanks so far. When I open MS Explorer and look in the Nemo folder there are only VOB/BUP files and the DVD navigation files. All the DVD navigation files are the ones that were selected in dvd decrypter as IFO files to rip. When I first downloaded DVD decrp I remember having an .IFO file and IC8 seeing it and buring the movie. It just would not play on stand alone or PC.

Method 2 - I decided to try DVD shrink beta vers 3.0 beta 5... but am not too sure how that went. I tried to just rip just the movie so the file sixe was less then 4.5g and tried using recordnow. getting disk errors on stand alone and played the menu of Nemo and started to play the movie but with no audio.

Method 3 - I decided to try ANYDVD running in the background, then I just used Pinnacle IC8 to copy from DVD to HD, which worked nice and created the .pdi file that they use. Then I buring that image from HD to DVD+RW and all looked great and plays wonderful except I have no audio.

Call me crazy but am I doing something wrong?????

These are a few of the links that I used.

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php

My goal is to just backup some of my kids movie to DVD (just the movie would be fine...The rest of Pinnacle will get used for DV to CD/DVD, AVI/MPG to CD/DVD, music etc...

PLEASE< PLEASE ..Tell the best and easiest way to achieve this. Is there a guide for what all the settings should be in DVD decrypter and or Pinnacle IC8....? thanks.

Try this method you might have better success, it still uses some of the tools u already have i.e. DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5.

1st, you need to do is to delete all the DVD ripped files from your previous attempts so you dont get confused when ripping the DVD again, best to start fresh.

2nd, insert the DVD, which you wanna backup, in the DVD drive.

3rd, Load up DVD Decrypter, select Mode then File (this will highlight the main movie files on the right window.

4th, In DVD Decrypter select Edit then Select All this will copy everything from the DVD to the hard drive.

5th, Select you destination, where you want to save your DVD files and press the big button (this should start removing any protection on the DVD and copy to the hard drive).

6th, Wait, and make a cup of coffee.

7th, Once finished Load up DVD Shrink, select Open Files and DVD Shrink will analyse the ripped DVD files.

8th, If you want to just back up the movie select reauthor and drag your movie folder (on the left side of DVD shrink to the new window), adjust compression if necessary ( needs to be under 4464MB the green bar) select backup then select browse create a new folder titled VIDEO_TS (this is where all the files from DVD shrink will be saved) select Region free and OK.

9th, DVD shrink will start to encode the movie only, which is what you selected.

10th, Wait and burn with your prefered burning programme, NERO RECORD NOW etc.

Tip: When burning you need to have a VIDEO_TS folder, which is where you saved all the DVD Shrink files, and a AUDIO_TS folder, you dont need to save anything in here, just for compatibility purposes then BURN.

Hope that helps, if you got any problems come bk and we'll try to help, let us know how you get on.

    kas

PS: heres a simulated guide of using DVD Decrypter with exactly the same steps as above
    http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvd-decrypter.php

and similiar guide for DVD Shrink, instead of clicking open select open Files and follow the other steps as outlined.
