  1. Hi,

I'm using every version of ffmpegX since 0.0.4d flawlessly to encode VOB to VCD.

Now I'm trying to reencode some of the divX I have into VCD so that I can watch them also on the TV screen. That works but I have jerky video (it's acceptable but during action scenes it's sometimes annoying to see the video slightly stop every 2-3 secs)

    - before I was turning the .avi file into .mov file with divX doctor and used Toast to make a very basic VCD (1.1) - That worked well but it was much longer and the video was jerky : I though this came from Toast

    - then I tried ffmpegX with QT decode to read the avi, but got the same jerky result. Therefore I think the problem is not Toast, but QT (most likely the 3ivx codec I'm using)

    - then I tried with neither QT decode nor mplayer decode (mpegenc decode I presume), no more jerky video, but sound sync problems and letterboxing was not right (I had small black borders, but the image was however slightly distorted)

    - then I tried with mlpayer decode but got the same results as with QT decode : Jerky video. In fact, in this last tentative, I worked on an already divX doctored file (.mov) and I feel this might be the problem.

TWO QUESTIONS out of this experience

    1. does ffmpegX ignore the mplayer decode option if the file is a .mov or divX doctored file ?

    2. Any other hint to avoid jerky video when turning divX to VCD ?

Thanks for any hint, and also thanks to Major for his wonderful software, which is for me "more than just a GUI"

  2. Consider the source footage you are working with. DivX is not exactly known for handling high-action sequences or 'scrolling' very well. In fact, every fansub I have downloaded sucks whenever the screen scrolls... and that is without even re-encoding!

Odds are that the DivX source footage is the source of the problem... if it is on the high-end of compression.
Slaughtering the competition with amatuer-quality VCD authoring abilities... fear my non-l33t skillz.

It ignores mplayer decode if video output format is not mpeg-2, or if input is .mov. You could try CVD instead of VCD, and encode the .avi instead of the .mov.

Are you using 0.0.6e? .mov to mpeg2enc's mpeg should encode without problems.

  4. Thx for the hint, it's time for me to try Chinese things

And yes I do use the 006e, always the latest
Maybe the sound sync problem I met came from the divX I used as I was unable to make anything out of it. An other divX encoded without sound problem (but still jerky).
I'll keep you informed about the mpeg2 output.

    Thx for all

speaking of the latest FFMpeg x, How do you install it? Do you install the packages first then go on to the installer? Does it matter that my mpg2enc is a text document? What are the system requirements? (I run 10.1.5) If anyone can help me figure this out, it will be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    Matt

  6. Hello,

Still trying to use mplayer decode by encoding the divX in CVD.

But, after many tentatives, I'd like to bring as a kind of conclusion to this matter :
I renamed my .avi into .mov to force QT decoding in a correct aspect ratio (if I keep the .avi extension, even with QT decode ticked, the movie is letterboxed in a distorted way - strange).
I erased my 3ivx codec from the Quicktime folder and just kept the DivX Alpha 5 codec.

Believe me or not, the video is not jerky any more !

My conclusion if I may : 3ivx codec must be some kind of sh** (don't know if this is pure english)
