Here is what I have done so far:

Captured the movie from my minidv to my hard drive.

Used TMPGEnc and converted the file to an mpeg.

Used Nero Expres 5.5.9.17 with the svcd plugin to create a svcd from the mpeg and burned it to disc.

I have tried both a cdrw as well as a cdr and neither is recognized by the standalone Toshiba dvd player.

I also tried vcdeasy but I confused myself more than anything on that attempt.

The site is fantastic abet slightly overwhelming but I am trying to use the Search and plow through as much info as possible before posting. I just need to know if I am missing a vital step or if I am on the right track.

    Thanks for any help.

Have you looked up you Standalone DVD player and see if it plays SVCD?
Not all players play SVCD. More will play VCD. And some players won't play CD-RW or CD-R. Look under DVD Players to your left.
May the force be with you.

    Tbear,

I tried the cdr on a few standalones. 2 were new Toshibas that play cdrs and mp3.

So does that mean the process itself is ok???

sorry if I was unclear but ALL the dvd players indicate that there is a
    "disk error"

If my steps are correct then I will just walk thru them in finer detail but if my steps are incorrect please LMK, thanks.

  6. you didnt write what templete are you using in tmpeg.
if you are using the wrong templete it might not work
my guess whould be that the avi is not in the right resolution
for what you are tring to make, and if you choose the wrong templete
you will get a "non standart" file that will not play on your dvd.

the mpeg 2 plugin for "nero" has nothing to do with it
because you allready converted the avi to mpeg with tmpeg,
you only use nero for the burning, so you dont need the plugin.

    here's a short tutorial :
1 - load the avi into tmpeg, and press "load"
chose the svcd templete (pal, ntsc or ntscfilm)
    2 - click on "start"
your avi will be converted to mpeg.
3 - i dont know how nero express works so i wrote
how to use the older nero.
open nero and select the "super video cd" templete from the left
and press "new" (on the right)
4 - load your avi to the left (down) corner of nero
5 - press "file" and "write cd"

this is all if you are tring to make an svcd

if you are tring to make VCD then load the templete in tmpeg
and use the "video cd" templete in nero.
if you need more help - post a reply.

I am using the NTSC template.

    I believe the resolution is 480 X 480?

Those are the steps I am following but no dvd player seems to recognize the cdrw not even media player 9 using my cd burner let alone any stand alone dvd player..

Please LMK if there are any other suggestions besides buying a dvd burner.

    SVCD
    enteries.svd (2 kb)

  9. you didnt say what model is your dvd, i know its a toshiba, but
    what model?

by the way - the folder "Segment" is empty on my svcd's
i dont know if it will make it work, but you can try to remove
the file when you are burning in nero.

after you drag and drop the mpeg file into nero,
go to the LEFT UPPER part of nero, find the folder "Segment"
and delete the file that is in it.

    tell me if it works.

I'll check on the various dvd players.

The Segment folder isn't created until after the mpeg is burnt onto the cdr so I don't know how I can get rid of it. Any ideas?

  11. try to download the older nero
    not the nero express.
maybe they changed something in the new nero express.
i think this will work for you, but its up to you.
