I goofed. Instead of backing up files on a dvd I ripped it into vobs and an ac3 with Smartripper. I realize that I can use dvd2avi to make a .d2v file that Tmpgenc will use to make a .m2v file, which I can then remux.
But, can I avoid re-encoding into the m2v file? I don't need smaller files, the movie is a Dvd5. I just want to remux. I've looked around and haven't seen anyone trying to recover from this mistake. Thanks for any help.

Try Tmpeg in Mpeg tools option. Open the vob in video and the ac3 in audio.

Tried it in Tmpgenc Plus. The program really balks when you open the vob file in video input, but eventually eventually manages it and creates a decent vbr. Thanks!
The only remaining issue is that it stops after one vob file, and there are four. There doesn't seem to be a way to chain the vobs. What would be a good program for joining them into one, I haven't looked into that one before.
[I tried merging with Tmpgenc under merge and cut, and the second, third, and fourth vob are seen by it as illegal Mpeg2 streams. No headers?? Also tried loading the ac2 file and the vob file sequence under Multiplex, but the program won't load more than one vob file in the window.] -
DV Tool is excellent for mergeing vob or mpg files. It's available in the tools section on VCDHELP.

Thanks once more.
DVtools did succeed in making a 3.6 gig vob file. Unfortunately Tmpgenc, after taking several minutes to come back to life after I dumped that in, required so much memory that my 512 megs under Win2k just wasn't enough.I guess the lesson here is to start off properly...
On the other hand, would the same thing happen when muxing a m2v file and the ac3? That's commonly done. Perhaps Tmpgenc is less efficient in managing memory for this task? -
try ifoedit, first mux together the vob files and in ifoedit just load the vob file load the ac3 file and create new dvd...
