  3. weren't there divx players out before dvd players? i thought that there were players like at circuit city. i remember haveing to like rent the movies and you could watch them like 2 or 3 times then it had a code or something that would disable the disk and you could purchase it if you wanted but either way you didn't have to return the disk. buying it would give you access to the disk forever.

yes there is one called "The Playa" and it works really good. The DivX that was mentioned at Circuit City is entirely different, the name is only the same by coincidence.

  6. divx is based on mpeg4 encoding. While divX(recognize the small cap and big cap) is DVD based on mpeg2 which are DVD disc where you rent it and it allow you to play it for a certain amount of time, then the disc will no longer be playable

  7. Ive built one of those car MP3 players and you could if you wanted to build your own DIVX player. But it would just basically be building a computer. Essentially any computer w/ TV Out can be a DIVX player. If you mean a stand-alone DVD player that plays DIVX then, no, theres no such thing. But if your DVD player plays VCD or SVCD then you can just convert a DIVX movie to an MPEG-1(2) format and use your CD burner to create an VCD/SVCD compliant disc, so theres no real need for a DIVX player.

My understanding was that it was meant as a joke to call it DivX . You know, like as a mockery of DIVX...a well deserved mockery!! Man...did Circuit City totally miss on that one.

  9. I think there will be soon players that also can play MPEG4
check realmagic.com, they are making chips allready to decode MPEG4 (or is this something really different??): http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/em8470series.htm

Video decoding: MPEG-1, MPEG-2 MP@ML, MPEG-4 advanced simple profile (without 1/4 pixel and global motion compensation)
