Recording on PC - possible>?

Is there a software application that will allow me to record what is happening on my desktop, either in mpeg or avi?

For example, if I am playing a game, is there a way to record it via a software program to an mpeg file?

I know this may sound stoopid, but someone told me it was psooible, but he couldn't remember the name of the software.

Remember, the only stupid question is the one that was not asked. Anyway, look into SnagIt! as a program that will do mpeg screen captures, which is what you are trying to do.
