I just used TMPgenc to encode an .AVI to a MpegII so that i could burn it to a cd as a VCD and play it on my DVD player. But after i encoded it, it turned out 2.17 gigs! Is that right? I used the tutorial on this site to encode it. Now when i try to load it into Virtual Dub i get an error saying "Mpeg inport filter: pack synchronization error". So how can i break it up? Please help. Thanks!

If you encoded your avi file in Tmpgenc to an mpeg2 file, you won't be able to you that feed for a VCD, as this needs an mpeg1 stream.
Was that a typo or did you really do this? -
No i really did it.
I Followed these directions

It said convert to DVD? -
Yes I do understand now what you did. This, however is the method to make mpeg2 DVD's. You want to make VCD's. The easiest way around this is to use a template in TMPGEnc (once started you click on "load" and choose the VCD Pal or if you're in the USA, NTSC template)
Shochan made a very good Guide about TMPGEnc to be read at
http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencexplained.htm
I think this will help you considerably. Just remember you are making a VCD, mpeg1 file format!

Firstly I would make sure that your DVD Player plays VCD's - and if "yes" plays them from CD-R's or CD-RW's. Check the DVD Player compatibility list.
If you choose the VCD template you'll see that the settings are already set for you. You basically just have to name the output files. Do a small test by using a clip that is no longer than 1 min.
