i know that there might have been a million threads like this before, but i did not find any that would answers that would solve my problem.
i have a pinnacle pctv rave, amd xp1600+, 256ddram, 200gb hdd 7200rpm. when i try to capture anything with virtualdub (any format, any resolution, any compression) almost immediately after hitting F6, the frame rate starts to jump and frames drop in every 2-4 seconds.
can anybody please suggest a solution to this problem?

You're not accidently hitting F5 are you? I had that problem a while back, and I was hitting F5 by mistake.
Also, under the Video tab (In capture mode) go to compression(compatibility) and make sure that "No recompression" is selected. -
I had this problem in Virtual Dub, I update capture card drivers and it fixed it
