how can i solve this problem? are there any other programs that could extract wav from an AVI? or is it possible to fix the AVI so i can extract the wav file successfully in tmpgenc? pls advise. thanks!

Try using Gold Wave (see Tools section). Just load the AVI, and save it as a wave file.
