  1. Hello ,
    One more newbie here...
I have few DiVx cds and I would like to convert them to VCD. Video files have an extension .VID and I can play it with Windows Media Player, but I cannot convert it to anything. TMPG and other programs keep saying: ”Format is not supported”... Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, using GSpot I got following information about my file:
    Video Format: Codec COL1
    Aspect: 480 x 328 (1.463 : 1)
    Bitrate 471 kb/s
    Framerate 24.999 FPS

    Thanks in advance.

Better late than never I suppose. You have encountered yet another old hacked version of the MS-MPEG4 called Cool1.

Some smartass has hexedited the FourCC code (which is how Windows identifies the format of a video within an AVI file) from MP43 to COL1 (there are also entries for col0, COL0 and col1). This is similar to the "Angelpotion" codec that you might see floating around on the net and also why Media Player can play it but TMPGENC chokes.

To fix it just use AVI FourCC Code Changer to change the codec to DIV3 (if you have DivX installed) or MP43 (if you would rather use the MS version).

You may as well remove the phony codec as well by starting Device Manager going into "Sound, video and game controllers" then get the properties up for "Video Codecs" there should be an entry for coolvideo/angelpotion or something similar just higlight it and click remove.

P.S. I think you'll find a VID file is just an AVI file with the extension changed.
