I'm looking at buying a new computer. What is a good computer for video editing and other things for under $2000.00? I was just wandering.

    thx

  2. that's a tough question to answer. are you going to be building the computer yourself, or buying from dell or whatever? if building yourself, you can get a real real nice computer for two grand, but i'm not sure if you're going to be including software for your editing in the $2,000 total. i spent about a thousand dollars total on my computer (used my old monitor) in april of last year. i built it myself, and it's as follows:
    Athlon XP 1800
Asus motherboard came packaged with processor and forgot model
40 Gig Maxtor HD with 2mb cache 5600 rpm
120 Gig Maxtor HD with 8mb cache 7200rpm
    a cd-r/dvd combo drive
    sony dru-500A dvd burner
Ge Force Titanium 3 video card 64mb

i've gotten loads of software since then, and the prices of these would send the overall cost of the computer about 3 fold more than what I paid. If you buy this same setup from dell lets say, it would probably run you at least $1600-1800, so there'd be no room for software. if you built the exact same computer yourself, i'd say you could getaway with around $850-900.

at any rate, my computer is satisfactory for me, and i'm doing all this stuff at what seems like normal speeds. I'd say get a revved up processor of at least 2 GHz or more, a nice big harddrive, and a real nice video card (128 mb) . you've got to decide for yourself what amenities you want. is the ability to record from your tv important to you? what about raid compatible motherboards? i'd say that for the money, you can really get a nice computer (video software not included), it depends on how you go about it.
