I downloaded a movie in a .avi format. The movie sounds and plays fine. Im tring to use virtualdub and load the avi file so I can save it as a wav file so it can be burned to a cd so it can be played in a home/car cd-player.
But Im wanting to beable to play for example Lion King in the car for my son to listen to. My son is visually impaired and I try to convert movies so he can hear them instead of watching them. Ive done this before and worked without any problems but some reason this .avi file I got wont load the .avi file. I keep getting this error " Couldnt locate decompressor for formt "XVID" (unknown message).
I have nimo50build8.exe and Divx 5.02 installed on my PC.

    2) Now Ive never tried converting a Mpeg or Mpeg2 to a wav file to beable to convert to a file to play on a home/car cd player till now. Ive did some searching and tried using DVD2AVi and (mpeg2tovirtualdubv166) then i was going to try and use virtualdub then try to get it to a wav file. But not having any luck with this either.

Does anyone know what Im doing wrong; or can do to fix either of these issues? The bottom line is Im try to take .avi and a .dat file I renamed as a Mpeg movie and try and just split the sound to a format so I can burn to a CD to beable to play in a home/car cd player.

If anyone has any links that would be great. The ones Ive tried dont seem to work for me or Im doing something wrong.

    Also
    I have Tmpgenc if needed.

    Thanks!

    1) the avi file has ac3 sound. you have to use direct stream copy and save the wav. afterwards rename it to .ac3. use HeadAC3he to convert that file into a real wav. done.
    2) you should be able to use virtualdub to extract the wav from an mpg just like an avi.

  3. http://www.xvid.org/downloads.html here is the decompressor you seek.

    Install the decompressor.
    Load the AVI into VirtualDub
    Audio > Full Prosseing Mode > Compression : No Compression > Conversion : 44100.
    File > Save wave

    Hope this helps.

The best and most reliable way is to use GoldWave http://www.goldwave.com/

All you do is start GoldWave and drag and drop the whole movie on it's window. GoldWave don't care about the video codec and only extracts the sound. You can now resample any 48khz down to CD standard 44.1khz and save out as wave.

The only reason I recomend this method is that Virtual Dub can't read AC3, MP3 VBR etc audio and MPEG 2 video as std (you can get versions that can - just). Plus Virtual Dub has a nasty habit of extracting a wave that is not a wave. i.e. the file may be called myfile.wav but is actually an MP3 with a .wav extension (even if you select "full processing" and choose PCM etc).

    I hope this helps )

Thanks thats a sweet program! It worked great on the .avi file. I havnt tried the Mpeg yet.

Now the orgianal .avi file was 715Megs and after converting it went to 938 Megs at 16 Bit 48Khz. When I save it can I pick a differant File Attribute to keep it up under a 700Meg files to fit on 1 cd? If so what would you recommand it keep the sound as good as possible and at the same time keep it under 700Megs.

    Again thanks!
You dont know how much I apperciate the help guys!

Have you considered saving it to a wave file format?

    Hi BuckMaster,

The file will be bigger than before because it is now in wave (yes Tommyknocker WAVE) and the original interleaved audio was poss in MP3.

The only way to make it smaller BuckMaster is to choose MP3 when you save it out in GoldWave, but this is only handy if you have a CD Player capable of playing MP3 files of CD-R/RW. You can get them on the net for about £40 UK (they play VCD too).

If your going to play it on a std in-car CD Player or a Sony Walkman type thing, then you may need to split it in two. Don't worry about the size of the wave, as the length of the movie. You can get about 80min of Wave audio onto a CD.

In Gold Wave just select the the movie itself i.e. chop off the "this movie was made by" crap and the credits at the end. Then "save selection" instead. This should make it smaller and I doubt your son cares about the credit music at the end.

    I hope this helps Ndb)

  8. Hey Ndb),

So dont chop of the wave file I just converted. Just convert the .avi file again and chop it then convert it again to a wav file to make it a little smaller?

I have a MP3 JVC player in my truck but trying to just keep everything in a wav format to beable to play them anywhere on a std in-car CD Player and home to be more convenient.

I havnt had a chance to try and convert the Mpeg file yet. Hope to work on both these tonight or tomorrow.

    Again Thanks Man!

Sure you can chop the wave you already converted.

You should have no probs with the MPEG file either, I load MPEG1 & 2 files all the time to extract the audio to wave

    Have fun Trucking )
