  1. I am starting this post to allow people to discuss using KVCD templates to create longer (S)VCD files.

KVCD is a non-standard (S)VCD templates (or X(S)VCD) which claim to (and do), allow much longer video on standard CDR format.

Firstly the templates are available here:

    http://www.kvcd.net/dvd-models.html

They can loaded into Tmpgenc. The setup is onlined in the guide, here:

    http://www.kvcd.net/guides/kguide/kvcdguide.htm

The setup is complicated, but main way of controlling file size (and quality) is the CQ setting. The lower the setting the longer the file, and the lower the quality. All this is in the guide.

The main consideration is the resolution, if you want to cram over 2 hours onto one 700Mb disk, then use a lower resolution template.

I used KVCDx3_NTSCFilm_352x480, with a quality setting of 46 you can achieve a 730Mb, 2 hour film. The quality is acceptable, about as good as VCD using Mpeg1. If you increase the resolution, and/or bitrate the quality is excellent.

I use the Mpeg2 templates, because Mpeg2 is better than Mpeg1 obviously.

I had to include VCD headers in the file in order to play them on my stand alone player, if you do this use the Mpeg1(automatic) setting in Tmpgenc, as this keeps the file size down.

If these play on your DVD player, then forget standard (S)VCD forever!!

Nah, forget DVD player.. encode at whatever resolution & bitrate you want, and play them on a PC!

    Hi Bax,

Here's something you can use as a framework. Take a look at the sample posted in the following link, made with KVCDx3, and the posted script. It's from the movie "Attack of the Clones", and that's how the complete movie (142 minutes ) looks like on two CDs: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2533
You can use that script as a starting point for all your encoding needs
