  1. I have been using DVD2DVDR 1.3.4 since I started doing DVD's and needed re-encoding. So far, I did about 20 movies.

I am doing NTSC movies (I live in Canada). Totay I got trouble with the movie "Asterix - Mission Cleopatre" (An europeen movie, but on a region 1 dvd). I have interlace artifacts on movement scenes.

DVD2DVDR didnt check any of the encoder options. But it recommended to check progressive Frames. So I check it and also check "Force Film" like I always do.

So I am now trying to learn more about how to double check the encoding settings with Bitrate Viewer. I got this from another thread:

If Pic structure: Frame -- check Progressive frames
If Field topfirst: Yes -- check Upper field first
If Quantscale: Nonlinear - ALWAYS check Linear quantizer scale
If Scan type: alternate -- do NOT check Zigzag scanning order
I am getting this info with BitrateViewer:

    Pic. structure: Field
    Field topfirst: No
    DCT type: Field
    Quantscale: Nonlinear
    Scan type: Alternate
    Frame type: Interlaced

Well according to this I should NOT had check progressive scan...

So what about ForceFilm? Do I still always check it?

  2. always check yourself with dvd2avi (with no video options checked) for frame type and bitrate viewer on the vob's for upper field and zigzag.

  4. I just use bit rate viewer and rip a single chapter and encode and just let it author through ifo edit to make sure that the settings are good! I have only done one encode so far so I'm just getting started, right now I m tring to author with meastro, and I am seeing that it is more of a pain in the but which way do you do it? I have the video encoded and saved to a directory, it is a NTCS film. Is it really bad to use Ifo edit for authoring after a encode or does Ifo edit just appear to make the movie look shorter or longer?
    Thanks alot,

  5. Well I am giving up with Asterix, I am going to use DVDxCopy and make 2 DVD`s.

    About authoring:

I use DVD Maestro. What I do is:

I drop subtitles cause they are a real pain. Takes too long to rip them for DVDMaestro with subrip. Then you have to do 2 pulldowns and even with all that, they get out of sync at the end of the movie.

    So:

= I produce the audio tracks (AC3 file) and the new encode video (MV2 file) with DVD2DVDR.

    - ForceFilm check, Start authoring if possible uncheck.
    - Normally, DVD2DVDR will do the pulldown for me (I used v1.3.4).
    - Has for the other encode parameters, I now used BitrateViewer to double check DVD2DVDR auto-settings.
    - I reserved spaces to re-insert the vobs back into the original DVD Video_TS and Movie TS_??_00 vob. (in the bitrate settings, reserved MB)

= I rip the chapters with ChapterXtractor. Save has DVDMaestro format. (This takes 1 min)

    = I start DVDMaestro:

    1. Double click the movie icon and change the aspect ration setting (bottom of the movie window) to match whats was on the original DVD. (Normally its 16:9 letterbox)
    2. Import the audio file and Video file in DVDMaestro. Wait for validation.
    3. Drag the video on the movie line, then the audio files on the audio lines. Make sure you put them in right order. (Normally x80,x81,x82, ...)
    4. Adjust the audio lines language.
    5. Import Chapters.
    5. Save the project.
    6. Compile.

= Re-insert the compile movie VOBS

    1. Rip the Video_TS files and movie IFO file and the TS_??_00 VOB into a folder
    2. Cut and paste the compile TS_??_01,02,... VOBs into the folder. Sometimes, I need to rename them to match the ??.
    3. Adjust the folder IFO with IFOUpdate.
    4. Do a GETVTSSECTORS in IfoEdit.
    5. Find where are the copyright messages (VOB-IDS) with VoBRaptor and DVD2AVI. Normally they are in the VIDEO_TS VOB or the movie TS_??_00 VOB
    6. Do a "deleteplayback" of those VOB ID`s (IfoEdit). Save
    7. Select the Video_TS IFO and do a region Free. (IfoEdit). Save
    7. Do a GETVTSSECTORS again (IfoEdit).
    8. Tests my output with a DVDplayer or IfoUpdate
    9. Burn.

I may have miss a few details but thats about what I do.
