  1. Hi,

I am finding that TMPG is kinda slow, it takes around 4 hours to do a 2.5 hour movie. I am wondering if I were to increase my RAM if I would notice a dramatic difference? Any other ways I can speed up the process?

    Thanks

get a faster cpu ... more or faster memory will do nothing (much) in terms of encoding speed ..

Mate, TMPGEnc (and all other encoding softwares) do not offer ball-tearing performance.
Do a forum search on "TMPGEnc speed" or something like that. There's been plenty of discussion in the past. Faster CPU, faster RAM, CCE, etc are all performance enhancing options (even if only slight).

However, in general, encoding is a sloooow process. You might be able to throw a few hundred dollars at your PC and reduce your 4 hours to 3 hours. Is it really worth it?

  4. Yeah I agree encoding is a slow process, BUT there is something wrong when it takes 4 hours to convert a Divx to mpg. I can Rip a DVD then convert it to mpg with 4 pass vbr and the whole process including ripping to HD only takes 4 hours for a 2 hour movie. TMPGEnc seems to take much longer than is necessary. Cinemacraft is much faster.

I would be jumping for joy if TMPG gave me 4 hours for a 150 minute movie, and though my PC may be modest it sure aint slow. Please send me your CPU for 'evaluation'
    Or do the encode overnight!

(i've had to sit thru multiple 10-15 hour encodes of a 119 minutes film that kept getting wrong, mumble mumble.... )

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
