Does USA hardware work in AUSTRALIAN computers ???

I'm in the USA at the moment and am considering buying the new Sony or Pioneer DVD burner to take home, will it work in my Australian Computer ???

Yes, it will work -- the DVD-R(W) burner itself cares not at all what sort of data you're burning to the disc or what TV standard its in, and will happily burn either PAL or NTSC discs as you desire. Your burned DVD-R(W) discs will not have any region code, so playback won't be a problem either.

Now, the bundled software that comes with the drive might be another matter; if you buy a retail package intended for U.S./North American sale, the video-editing software that comes with it will probably be set to capture/encode NTSC by default, and may not give you the option to do PAL. This, however, is a minor annoyance at most, especially if you don't plan to use the bundled software anyway.

What about playing commercial DVDs? Will it play only region 1 since it is made for American market?

Most PC DVD drives allow you to set the region up to 5x before they 'lock' in, so it shouldn't be a problem.
