This may sound like a dumb question.

Ok. I understand that if I want to burn onto a DVD-9 that I would (somehow) have to burn onto both sides of the disc.

If so, would I have to turn the disc over in a DVD player to view both parts?

I need to know the answer to this b4 I invest any money into the discs. Someone help!!!

DVD-9 is dual layer, and you cannot burn these.
DVD-10 is what your referring to, which is just a double sided DVD-5
you have to flip it over, yes

OK. you know more about this than I do at the moment. Which do you think is more sensible, burning to the dvd-10 or just putting the movie on 2 dvd-rs?

    Thats all personal preference..
Me.. Ima re-encoder, so i would make it fit on one dvd

as for using 2 or one double sided...
if you have a DVD changer, i would go for 2 dvdrs
otherwise, your going to have to get up half way thru the movie anyways
    so its up to you

I've been trying to reencode all day! This guy named Cavie on VCDHelp makes these good guides on how to do stuff like this. I've been completely unsuccessfull. What method do you use to encode?

    rip vobs with dvd decrypter
    load vobs into dvd2avi
    load d2v file into tmpg
    encode

encoding isn't worth it if the quality is sacrificed.

how good does it come out? if you want to, IM me please. i need to pick at someone's brain for a minute.

Quality is too subjective... Its up to you to decide whether its good enough..
personally, i find 100Min Kvcds good.... so re-encoded dvd's are just fine

2 x DVDr is the way to go in my opinion. Encoding comes a the cost of quality. If you have a dencent TV or monitor you will see the effects of encoding. Consult my webpage for guides on how to rip/split/burn DVDs if you're interested

I reencode with tmpgenc at the highest quality (very slow) motion setting, at 2-pass vbr and have never noticed any difference (nor have my friends and family) even with a 3 hour film like LOTR.

A lot of people will recommend using "slow" but the extra time is worth it for the "very slow" setting. Same for VBR, it takes longer, but it is worth it.

oh, and I have a crystal clear flatscreen trinitron, so it isn't my TV effecting my opinion.

  12. hi.. to rip a dvd9 and make it fit on a dvd4,7gb i use these program's:
    dvd decryptor
    dvdx 1.8
    ulead dvd workshop.

with dvd decryptor i rip the dvd to my harddrive.
with dvdx i open de vts_0*_*.ifo file and chose what audio i want and what subtitle. then i chose to make it a svcd mpg file.
with ulead dvd workshop i make a simple menu and load in the mpeg file.
after a few hours i have a video_ts folder that i can write to disc with nero.

than the backup is ready and you can watch it on almost any standalone dvd player.
but remember it's only for making a backup for you're self.

    p.s. greatings from holland (europe)

  13. Re-encoding the video stream isnt all that bad (except for the time it takes) depending on how low the quality has to go. i use rempeg2 and i dont go below 65% quality. anything above that i think looks just fine.

Heres another option, I believe its sony that makes a dvd changer that will read both sides of a disc without having to flip it. a little costly but an option

    Software i use:
    DVDDecrypter
    VOBEdit
    IFOedit
    rempeg2
    Prisimo
    windows xp pro
    AMD XP 1800
    100G harddrive
    Pioneer a03 dvd burner

the best way to re-encode for dvd is to use cinema craft encoder.

it is fast and vastly superior to tmpenc for mpeg2.

bear in mind it is somewhat expensive!

dual layer dvds are to expensive to buy even if u could modify the player to write them!

i can't remember what the average is for a 3 hour film, but that is easy to figure out , just keep adding 50 or so till it says 4000MB.

it is prolly around 2500-3000, and I set the min at 1200 and the max at 6000.

    "very slow" mot setting
