run top or ps in a term. If mpeg2enc isn't running, that's your problem. See the other posts about getting this installed properly.

This issue is being addressed even as we speak

It means that the BSD package isn't installed on your system.

The next version of forty-two checks for this, and the updated docs make this clear as well

    (Who knew?)

Its on your OS X install CD. Look for a package named BSD and install that

    Code:
               ************************************************
**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
               ************************************************

    Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
    - Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
      - Try -ao sdl or use ALSA 0.5 or the OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9.
      - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
    - Slow video output
      - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
    - Slow CPU
      - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try -hardframedrop.
    - Broken file
      - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
    - Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
      - Try -cache 8192.
    - Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
      - Try -nocache.
    Read DOCS/video.html and DOCS/sound.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/bugreports.html.

Just wondering, what do the numbers at the bottom mean?

I've got a 5.95 GB avi file on my HD right now. 400 MB mpv right now. I only have about 3.8 GB left of hard drive space. Stupid me. I should have started this on the other partition. But maybe I'll have just enough space for this to work. At this stage of the game I can delete the test .mpgs right, to free up some space?

This program seems to wreak havoc with my clock too. But that's easily corrected.

    EDIT:

OK I've deleted both test .mpgs and some other files. mpv file now 440 MB, and I've got 4 GB left.

Now to go to bed and let this run overnight... and then some...

Seems like a great program by the way. Great work!

  11. Great Job on this program, this is the first In Sync SVCD I have made, and On my first try no less .

    Any way one quick question....
How many pass VBR does the program use? I see that the sample is set to one pass is it the same for the full movie?

Ok I lied two questions is there a way to set how many passes the encoder uses now, or in the future maybe like a checkbox for 2,3 or 4 pass.

Again thanks for the in sync SVCD.

That's the vision we had. You have no idea how happy it makes me to see folks say things like this

forty-two currently does 1-pass encoding, with high bitrates. It aims for ease and quality, moreso that size.

Mpeg2 encoding will always be 1 pass, as this is all the encoder supports at this time.

Mpeg1 could be multi-pass, as well as Divx.

As low as it is, don't you think you'd get into diminishing returns?

    40 hours for a 10% savings and +5%-10% quality? I dunno...

  13. Kai,
Great job on 42. I know I did something wrong during the install. The terminal window closed before I could get the output, but basically it tried to play back the test file and couldn't find it. I used the line you posted to d/l mpeg2enc directly to the folder with the terminal. I also got some stuff about trying to find the font folder. I've scoured this entire thread, and for each poster that had similar issues, there was a fix, I just need mine. Thanks. I will definitely be donating. I had given up on making svcds. I was planning on buying a set-top DivX player. Thanks again.

  15. Finally got it to work! YES! I'm working on a vcd right now, almost done. Question...I did not check the first selection, the bitrate button? What is going to happen? So far I have a mpv that is 809mb and an mp2 that is currently 74mb. How is this going to fit on a cd? Or will it automatically create 2 files for 2 cds.

I have been ripping from a dvd full of tv show episodes. The first episode ripped perfectly (which is awesome considering the trouble I have had with this in other apps). However, when I try to rip the 2nd episode I check rip title stream and type in 02 (which is the track number) . forty two then proceeds to rip episode 1. What am i doing wrong?

Bile, the Insomnia dvd I am talking about is not the american movie with Robin Williams, but a Norwegian flick of the same name (if you ripped this movie, that is very cool). The yuvscaler only hangs on this and a couple of other movies. It works perfectly on all other movies that I have tried (i have ripped around 10) so it can't be a problem with mpeg2enc. I get the same error with all criterion disks that I have tried. If anyone has managed to rip a criterion disk (especially one with subs) let me know One of the criterion disks (sanjuro) will sort of rip in ffmpegX, but I have to do it with quicktime encode and therefore have synch problems and no subtitles (and I can't speak japanese, hehe).

  17. I have been trying to do a dvd -> dvd downsample for super troopers for two days and have scoured the postings but i am still getting errors and a scratch folder with some files, biles.mpv that is about 8k and three others with 0k or 4k sizes.

Last nite it looked like it was working but this morning, nada. Before I was not even getting past the preview portion so I replaced all the linked files with fresh ones and made sure none of them were labelled as text files. I did the commandline retrieval of the mpeg2enc. No change. I also downloaded the latest build of 42. still nothing. I figured it might be the settings I was putting in so I stopped selecting the checkbox for using english and for ripping title stream. So last nite with nothing selected except the check for dvd i started it again for the 5th time or so and after the usual preview played, it didn't quit but actually seemed like it was starting to encode because it stopped on the ripping and encoding message and stayed like that for quite some time. Went to sleep and this mornign the following terminal messages appear. I'm at a lost.... any ideas?

This is what Kai said to me, and it worked fine...

mpeg2enc seems to not be installed properly.

if there is an mpeg2enc in your app support forty-two folder, erase it.

open a term, paste this in, all one line:

    cd /Library/Application\ Support/forty-two && curl http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/mpeg2enc -O

    then re-run forty-two
Seems to have worked for me...

    Hi...

Please be as specific as possible as you can about any issues you are having, and please read the readme enclosed. It sounds like you didn't copy the forty-two folder from the disk image to the proper location, but its hard to be sure from what you've typed here.

I'm trying to rip Lawrence of Arabia. Any help would be useful. I did the terminal mpeg2enc install. I went into the properties and deleted the .txt extension. I can't wait for this to come together...

P.S. the whole father of your children thing is contingent on my first rip...haha

  23. Congratulations on a fantastic application. First try on converting a german DVD (The Mummy) to english VCD worked flawlessly. Very impressive.

    One observation and one request:

My PAL DVD produced a NTSC VCD. This is actually what I wanted but I assumed the default case would be PAL to PAL or NTSC to NTSC, as I imagine the normal user would want this.

Is it possible to add the possibility of Finnish Subtitles and Finnish Language? Please!......

Thanks a lot for all the hard work leveling the playing field for us Mac users.

i got the following again, after my second attemp to rip Spirited Away, the region 2 NTSC Japanese version. it can't find the ac3 file, which sucks casue the video turned out so great and with the subs. any thoughts on hw to fix this? i've made 1 vcd so far and it tunred out great. and i tried this dvd twice and no luck. i'm also trying another reg. 2 ntsc japanese dvd Kiki's Delivery Service (something like that) and when i choose english subtitles, japanese also pop up, so i tried selectedting the japanese option like maybe they were switched and i still got japanese. didn't try to french option yet, but there are englich subs on the disc casue they work on my player. and for the spirited away dvd the english subs worked great.

any thoughts on how to fix this can't find ac3 file would be greatly appreciated. or also how to just keep the video mpeg file i have and rip the audio to match?? the video was 23.978, so not sure hot to do this?

    thanks
