  1. Does anyone know of an alternative to putting sticky labels on dvdrs.
I know when you put a sticker on a dvdr it causes problems but i would still like to label them somehow.

    Does anybody have any suggestions?

  2. I use www.surething.com hub labels. They work great. They cover the inside of the disc. Print what you want on them and apply easily. I have burned 66 DVD's with these labels and no problems by me or anyone who has borrowed them. Cheap also.

I've been pimping the Casio's CW-50 Title Printer on a number of threads. Its a thermal printer that prints on most media and it is under $100. I've tried sticky labels, sharpies, and $1600 thermal printers. This is the best I know of for low volume personal use.

  4. I don't know about labeling for DVD-R but for CD-R, there is a Yamaha CD burner that can burn the label on the other side of the CD. Look like you have to put the CD in upside down, then it uses laser to burn the text/picture. Don't know if it can do the same for DVD-R.

I used to be concerned about this, but then my absolute need to put professional quality labels onto discs made me come up with a solution.

The problem lies in the label not going on perfectly centered. even if it is off by a half mm, it can throw off the balance. Since all the commercially available CD/DVD stompers have at least that much clearance on the labeling stage, it causes the problems.

My solution: wrap a piece of scotch tape around the center posts (the one for the label AND the one for the disc) until they hold the disc and sticker SNUGLY. Trim off the excess tape. Now, when the label goes on, it is perfectly centered. Then, burnish it very well sandwiched between two pieces of paper.

I'm using a general purpose office labeler, a Brother PTouch PT-65 with 1/2 inch tape. The tape is extremely thin and lightweight. I'm not trying to compete with standard CD labels, but I wanted something more professional looking that just writing on a CD with a "Sharpie".

  7. If you are good with your hands...

Cut out stencils for your title text/logo in a manilla folder. Then trace the stencil using a CD label pen. Not the most elegant solution, but it gets you a nice CD label without the problems of using adhesive labels.

  8. Intersting. Like doing a silkscreen system. A small plotter cutter would work well cutting out the stencel.

Instead of kicking speed up on CD burnners etc, I wish they would spend time on doing decent quality labeling system that does not impact a disk.

Leaning toward a CW-50 unit right now. The Inkjets are nice but a slightly modify std printer for 2x or more the price is a bit steep.

On my Casio CW-50 I've printed on the following media that I can remember. I've printed on more; I just don't remember the brands.

The following are DVD-Rs and unbranded:
    Ritek 1x Silver/Purple
    Mitsui 2x Gold/Gold
    cdrecordable.com 1x
    cdrecordable.com 1x w/ink jet printable surface
