Hello all!
I'm new to the process of backing up a DVD to DVDR, so please excuse me if my question is silly or has an obvious answer.![]()
From what I have read here, there would appear to be two ways to achieve this:
1) Rip all the files you need using something like SmartRipper, then
2) Use IfoEdit and ReMPEG2 to produce the files you need to put into your VIDEO_TS folder for burning with say Nero,
or
3) Use DVD2AVI to create d2v and wav files, then use TMPGEnc to produce a mpeg2 file that you can author and burn with say Ulead MF.
Using the same final size estimate, I've achieved similar results (that is, I can't tell any difference) using both these methods but, on my PC, IfoEdit/ReMPEG2 takes about 7-8 hourswhereas DVD2AVI/TMPGEnc takes about 3-4 hours
.
Why is this?
Regards,
Rob

If that is the case, then why do so many people use the 'slower' option?
One extra thought....I read somewhere on this forum that DVD uses a 'VBR' format as opposed to a 'CBR' format. My previous attempts using VBR were about twice as slow as CBR (due to 2 pass?). Could it be that ReMPEG2 retains the VBR of the original DVD whilst TMPGEnc automatically uses a CBR template?

Rempeg does retain the VBR encodeing of the original DVD. In my expierence Rempeg and Tmpeg(in 2-passVBR) take about the same time to transcode. Try CCE,it produces better results and in 1-passVBR will take about 25% of the time to encode as the other methods.
