  1. I certainly hope that somebody can give me some ideas as to why I am having trouble capturing a clean video. I have been trying everything possible for about 2 weeks and no luck.
I have been reading the post in this site but I have not seen anybody posting with the same trouble.
At least I think not. I am new and might not have understood it to be the same.
Here is my problem....I am getting horizontal lines when I capture. They are all the way through the picture but they show up much better on the edges of objects that are moving on the screen.
What I mean by that is that the lines are distorted, making an otherwise smooth edge, rough.
I am capturing with a Canopus ADVC 100 via firewire into my PC.
I am capturing from a 2nd gen Sony DSS reciever.
I am using an AMD 1700 processor with 40gb available on an 80gb hard drive.
I have 512 MB of ddr ram and a Raedon 7500 video card.
I have tried both the RCA and the S-Video picture connections into the Canopus from the DSS reciever.
My system dictates that my reciever is about 30 ft from my Canopus.
I have tried an RG6 cable with RCA connections for that distance.
I have even pulled the reciever out so that I can test with a 3 ft S-Video cable and a high grade RCA cable.

I am capturing wth Adobe 6.5 software.

I did read about the quality of raw DV so I have tried a number or programs and options to see if maybe Mpeg files might look better.
I have tried MPeg 1, 2 and DV.

As for software, I have tried Adobe Priemere 6.5(I need a NASA engineer to fully understand this program), Canopus Pro, Ulead 5 and Tpgenc for converting the raw DV to footage.

I have tried non-interlaced, interlaced and a ton of different pixel ranges from 720-480 to 352-240.

    Nothing has worked.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

you are capturing Dv which is interlaced .. it will look interlaced always on the pc but normal on your TV ..

what are you trying to do ? make a dvd ? and what are you going to play it on (final product ) a tv or pc , and is your tv HDTV ready or not ?

  4. Thanks Baldrick,
This is exactly what I am dealing with. I am going over this site now...

    And thanks also BJ.
And in answer to your questions..I do want to be able to play the videos
on my PC as well as the TV.
I may try Divx later but I am concentrating on Svcd's on CD right now.
And my TV is not HDTV ready.

To add a little more info to your questions BJ.... Although I had never seen raw DV before , I have tons of VCD's and SVCD's so I had a fair
idea what to expect in final outcome on the PC.
I had tried different cables, different programs, etc and I really was not sure which direction that I should be going. (better capture?..maybe use different filters?....maybe resolution?..I really could not tell as I read here that raw DV has artifacts)
I had read through 6.5, and although the help section tells you what the program can do, it really gives almost no info on how to do it.
Since this program is my capture, I was really suspecting that this might be part of my trouble.
I will say that I love this site and your reccomendations is why I opted for the Canopus.

    Thanks again

VCD and SVCD most often is made from a film source (i.e. progressive) , DV (for the most part) is always interlaced (always right now transfered interlaced)...

to remove the interlacing as found on that site link , will make things look better on your PC , but be aware that completly removing interlacing will make the picture look not smooth on your TV ..
