When I first upgraded to XP, my DVD ripping speed was remarkably fast (up to 12-13x); I could rip Attack of the Clones in under 15 minutes. The entire time, I received this "error" when loading SmartRipper 2.41 stating that no ASPI layer was detected. I thought nothing of it and moved on.

Recently however, while ripping the extended cut of LotR, I noticed a dramatic drop in my ripping speed, down to 2, MAYBE 3x if I'm lucky. The odd thing is that I changed nothing, no new hardware, no new software, the same system I had a few days before getting the uber-ripping speeds (and still getting the ASPI layer "error").

So I tried installing the latest ASPI layer, as linked via the Tools section of this website, and, for me, it did jack for my ripping speeds. Heck, I think the ASPI may have reduced my ripping speed by about 0.5x.

Here is a screen cap of the ASPI check program that came with the package:

Could the two missing components be the key to this problem? If so, how would I find those components?

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? All are appreciated.

I don't get any sort of ASPI error with DVD Decryptor, however the ripping speeds are no different.

This ForceASPI program ... it is safe to run in WinXP I assume? The last thing I need right now is to f- something up and have to format.

  4. ForceASPI is Adaptec ver. 4.60 it was written for Win95 and works on all
Windows OS.It sounds like your ASPI layer is fine and that your rip speed depends on the disk and your DVD-ROM.The fastest i'm able to rip is 7.1x
    with DVD Decrypter.
