Try JVC which can be found at Circuit City(the carry the GOLD colored models), SEARS(carries the Silver), and even K-mart(carries the Charcoal BlK). Sanyo is another option which can be found at Wal-Mart. Some people have said that RCA is good. I know someone will eventually post a report that Pioneer is a great XVCD player, unfortunately, their most recent models would not play some homemade XVCDs that I created. But of course, only you will know by making your own tests. It's good thing stores have a return policy.

I've got an APEX AD600A, but I can't really recommend it unless you plan to hack it. If you want a player that plays everything checkout the Hitachi 415U (~$180).
Plays DVD, VCD, xVCD, SVCD, xSVCD, & MP3. -
The newest RCA player (RC 5240P) plays all the goodies like VCD, XVCD, SVCD, XSVCD, MP3, DVD(obviously), CD-R, CD-RW. As far as i know this is the only RCA that officially supports CD-R/RW. I got the player at Zellers for $265 CANADIAN so that should put it in your price range.

I have an Apex AD600A and it plays anything i have tried: VCD, SVCD, XVCD, CDR and CDRW. I highly recommend it!

I highly recommend the Pioneer DV-434. It is a progressive scan player that can play DVD, VCD, xVCD, SVCD, etc. etc. It is only $149 USD at Costco warehouse... and $159 at other locations.
I'd also recommend the RCA 5240P. I owned a 5220P and it was a solid, quality workhorse of a player and I'm sure that the 5240 is even better.
I recommend staying away from the Apex line of players. Although they play virtually every disc (like the Pioneer and RCA) and MP3 (unlike the others) They don't do a good job of playing them. Compression artifacts are very evident on VCD playback, and DVD playback can be problematic on certain titles. -
Cutis Mathes is a decent DVD player which can be found at K-mart for $159. I will post a review about this player sometime this week.
