  1. I am trying to install a fireiwre HD on a laptop with windows ME for a friend.

    Generic Firewire Case
    WD 100GB HD
    Intel Celeron 15 GHz
    Toshiba Lapotop
    Firewire Card

    Here are the specifics:

Install the hard drive with jumper settings set to Master (on the HD it says for Master no jumper on single line). The firewire case says to set anything you connect to being master.

The laptop recognizes that the firewire card is in its slot and working properly, but there is no drive listed on the computer. I hoked the fireiwre case with Hard Drive to my desktop running windows XP
AMD Athlon 2200 XP and the desktop recognizes the hard drive. I then took the laptop firwire card and hooked it up to my laptop (Compaq AMD 550MHz running windows XP, and this laptop recognizes the fireiwire hard drive correctly.

Is there an issue with Windows ME that I am not familiar with as to why the computer is not recognizing the WD Hard Drive?

    Thanks!

i thought winMe wouldn't reconize drives this size or some laptops wouldnt .. something like that .. even though its external ..

put another drive (small one) in the case and see if it works .

also where you get a 15 GHz laptop ? that sucker must scream ..

not sure if ME will accept a drive that big.

ME is the worst release ever.

  5. The drive has to be formated with FAT16 or 32 before it will show up as a drive letter. You cannot format the drive via the firewire connection if the drive doesn't already have a good partition. I had to connect my drive to my IDE cable on my PC, and then format it. After that, it worked just fine as a firewire hard drive under Me. There migth also be a utility where you can format a blank drive via the firewire.
