Just use DVD2SVCD to make a back up of your DVD's. Very easy and will not take a long time. Every system is diff. when it comes to time, no two are the same speed, motherboard, ram, cpu, overclocked or not, just run on yours and u will see, should take a few hours that is all. Look for the guide on SVCD and u will see very easy just a few clicks and u are on your way. Just see if your player plays SVCD.

I have windows xp and use the following tools to make a dvd to a VCD.
===================
DvdDecryptor -- to rip the dvd to a vob file
SmartRipper -- Same as above just a little different interface
Xmpeg -- To encode the Vob file to a Mpg
FlaskMPEG -- Same as above, but the original version.
TMPGEnc -- Use this to cut the Mpg to 2 files
CCE 2.64 -- The encoder plug-in to use with flask or Xmpeg
EasyVcd -- to add chapters and format to a VCD bin file
Nero burning rom -- To burn the bin file to a VCD
====================
1.use dvd decryptor to rip the dvd to your harddrive
2. use Xmpeg or FlaskMpeg, open the ifo file for the vob file set
3. Select your encoding method, you can encode to a AVI or a Mpg if you want an mpg you have to use and encoder like Cinema craft, or panasonic
4. After Xmpeg or Flask is finished you wil have a mpg of your movie
5. use TMPGEnc to split you move into two files, Vcd will only allow 80 min but if you use easyvcd to make chapters the file size of the final film will be a little larger, so I usually cut them at 1hr and 15min.
6. Use Easy Vcd to setup the mpg to a bin file, add chapters or menu if you want
7. use nero to burn the bin file.
This is very simple guide and some of the settings are left out, but it should get you started. If you go to the guides section you will see many great guides.
This is the one that i like http://www.vcdhelp.com/sefy/
For a 2hr movie it takes about 3hrs quality is pretty good
I have a P4 1.7 256ram 10 gig os drive and a 60gig drive where the video editing is done -
There are many ways to do it, the previous two posts are only these user's preferences. However, we need to know something. In what format you want to back it up? (you have to check what your DVD player is compatible with).

Seems to be working decently so far.I don't get why so many others want to use all these crazy procedures with tons of different programs to achieve the same results.Especially with the audio stuff,as it seems like TMPGEnc can handle audio just as good as all those other crazy programs. -
Wow that is cool, I did not know that you could use TMPGEnc to encode both audio and the video.
I am fairly new at this, as far as the dvd ripping goes. I have recorded video from captured material for a long time that's easy.
From the guides I always thought you had to video server the vobs, to split the audio and video before using TMPGEnc.
I'll give that a try Star Warrior -
I used combination of DVD2SVCD + TMPGNec (part of DVD2SVCD process) and guide either from here or linked from here. Very easy (followed steps exactly) and great result (quality of sound and picture). All that on WinXP and result was 2 SVCD disks with VCD subtitle.
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home)
