  1. Greetings All,
Does anyone have a All In Wonder Radeon working that DOES NOT drop frames at 720x480 resolution? I have 2 different mother boards, AMD Athlon xp1700+, 768 Mb ram, Asus A7V333 mb. I just capture about 1-3 min then get a <1% dropped frames message.

    Thanks

  2. Try different drivers, and capturing from another app. I never had frame dropping problems with it.

  3. Right-click on the capture window, and select "Show total frames" instead of the percentage.
If you're seeing <1% after 3 minutes, it's probably a single frame that has been dropped to keep audio and video in sync (usually due to soundcard clock stability).

1 frames for 3 minutes is less than 0.02% (VCRs can be off by +/- 0.5%)

  4. Hi Sulik & Crahak,

    Sulik
This is my second motherboard with on board sound and it is still dropping frames. Now on my Asus board I also installed my soundblaster board and it also dropped frames. If ATI has a problem with sound/video sync problems, I wish they would capture the audio on board also. I'll try Monday night what you suggested and I'll post my results.
    Thanks.

    Crahak
What is your setup like? And what applications do you use, I tried VirtualDub and still dropped frames? My Raid setup benchmarked real good, I use 2 30Gb/7200 rpm Western Digital drives. PLayed with apg settings, pci latency settings, still no hope. This new motherboard uses a AMD northbridge and a Via southbridge, so I have to find the right drivers that support this combo. And more info would be helpfull, I'm ready to scrap this whole video capture business!

    Thanks Again

It might be caused by one of your PCI cards.

I had a similar problem with my current system (1Ghz PIII), but it was quite a bit higher than 1% loss. It was very frustrating. I actually did a full system reload to try to rid myself of the problem. When that did not work, I pulled out all of my cards except the AIW and 2400A controller & the frame drops went away. I experimented and found it to be my USB2 controller card. I need to experiment with moving the cards around to different slots, but I have not had a need for USB2 for a while, so I have not done so yet.

  6. This seems to be normal behavior for this card. It seems when you first start the recording that it takes a couple of seconds for it to get rolling. I have noticed when you start the recording try not to move the mouse. Sometimes this helps. But as long as it stays below 1% you should still have good captures. I would select show frames so you know exactly how many frames. If it does not continue dropping when the capture is going then you are doing great.

Don't give up hope! I capture the TV show 24 every week at 720x480 using Huffy compression. The audio isn't compressed at all. I drop about 15 to 20 frames in an hour. You don't even notice it when you play it back. My computer is only a PIII 733 with 512MB Ram and a 120 GIG hard drive. So if I can capture at 720x480 with a PIII you should be able to no problem. By the way, my video card is the All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500. After I generate this 30 gig video file I compress down to XVCD (1600KPBS) it using TMPGEnc. It takes 12 hours, but it looks really good!

    Hey djmattyb,

How many frames per second do you use, and what program?

    Thanks...

  9. Hello All,
My motherboard has no pci slots filled, usb is disabled, serial ports disabled, printer port and game port disabled. I capture @ 720x480 29.97 fps. When I use ATI software avi capture it does not report dropped frames but the video has some real jerky movement in it.

Thank you all for responding to my request for help.

I use VirtualDub. I capture at 29.97 FPS. After capturing, I edit out the commercials and then save the audio and video as seperate files. I found that I got errors if I tried to keep them together. I then input the AVI video and .WAV audio files into TMPGEnc using a template that I modified myself. I usually do about 2100 video bitrate which makes the 42 minute episode of 24 fit just perfectly on one CD. I can hardly wait for the next episode!

  11. That is probably the first sign of trouble. Are you utilizing an on board audio card. If so I would say that is the begining of your problems. I would suggest disabling it and installing something like a sb Live!5.1 or Audigy. Capturing video and audio is a precise art. I would also make sure all your mb drivers are up to date and that any cache hard drive buffers turned on in the bios are disabled. You should also make sure the hd is defragged and its atleast ata100 7200rpm. I have also heard of problems with some via chipped mother boards, but I have also seen problems with intel mb. Speed is the key issue and bottleknecks create the problems that you are indicating. It is no industry secret that many onboard audio hinders the system performance and are known to cause timing issues. This is also noticed in heavy load video games. Well Good luck.

Whenever I used to capture with the ATi software it dropped frames straight away and then the percentage dropped as the amount capped went up . I now use VDub to capture and it stopped it (sometimes it drops 1 frame immediately) but now only drops frames if the source is crappy ie an old tape , but even then , I never notice them missing on playback , just like the other person who posted this observation .

  13. Thanks All,
I'm going away this weekend, but when I come home Monday I'll replace my on board audio with my soundblaster. If that don't work, I'll be sure to try vdub again.

    Have a good weekend.
