  1. Quick question: why does everyone seem to use tmpgenc? Is it really that much better than everything else, or just because it's free?

If I'm using PowerDirector (or any other package) for editing, and it also has the ability to encode to mpg2, is there a reason not to just do it with PowerDirector?

Is it a quality issue, and is tmpgenc really that much better?

    Thanks.

It really is better (when used properly) than most other encoders, apart from CCE. And it is probably better than CCE for mpeg1. Certainly, if you compare it with Nero, Pinnacle or Roxio (and probably a lot of other pricier offerings) there is no comparison.

And TMPG is not free for mpeg2, but it is probably the best value software you can find anywhere.

I can honestly say that I've never used a piece of software more than Tmpeg. For $49 it can do everything the big boys can (CCE etc) with the same quality at about 5% the cost.

You must have got a slightly imperfect version. Don't complain if it doesn't work properly. 8)

  6. The simple rule of thumb is...

    MPEG1/VCD, go for Tmpgenc.
    MPEG2/SVCD, go for CCE.

Although I would really like to see a 4 pass Tmpgenc encoding, when its implemented...

once multipass VBR is implemented and the speed is increased, TMPGEnc will rule the world! mwahahaha.a..aaahhahaa *cough*

The time to encode will be 4 times longer, though.
