  1. do TV broadcasts and VHS tapes have a bit rate for either audio or video?

    TV broadcasts and VHS tapes are analog, not digital. No bits, therefore no bit rate.

    I don't know wether or not TV broadcasts and VHS tapes "technically" have a bitrate. I can tell you I have been watching what claims to be the "video data rate" in VirtualDub during some of my captures directly into my computer from "my" cable provider. Lately, the highest I have seen that get is 4200 kbits/sec. Since I primarily use 2-Pass VBR I have been setting the max to 4000.
