lets see retain the entire movie on 1 or 2 discs just like the original in 35-40 minutes using DVDxCOPY or spend 3-6 hours reencoding the darn thing to a lesser quailty, WOW thats hard to figure out, most people here are more intertested in the quickiest way to rip, opps I mean backup a DVD, with the "CCE way" you can get maybe "one" done a evening in that same time with DVDxCOPY you can have 6-8 done, ..time to some people who have another life is important,so they are looking for a quick way to backup up their DVD, most do not want to wait HOURS to backup a DVD they can just buy for $10.
What I do? I do both ways, but its 75% DVDxCOPY and DVD2DVDR reencoding 25% of the time. I look at each DVD I have and decide how I will back that up, picking out the best or the program I decide I want to use, so it also depends on the DVD itself, example Minority report I wanted everything so I used DVDx COPY and ended up with 3 DVD+R's ( one for disc 2), on Ballistic I wanted it all stripped so I used DVD2DVDR and needed no reencoding and have 1 disc with just the movie, 5.1 and chapter stops and thats all.

perhaps the reason some people want to keep the original DVD contents intact is so that they can sell copies to people who insist on having all the extra crap.
that is why they have DVD cases for sale and the guys over yonder invented FukNPrint -
okay, so this guy doesn't have too much going for him, but I agree in a way:
I like the menu and the extras, I like them a lot.
however...
I F*ING HATE THE CLIPS BEFORE YOU GET TO THE MENU THAT YOU CANNOT SKIP!
Sometimes it's just the FBI warning, which is annoying, but whatever, 10 seconds. But other times, it is company logo animations and ads which can be minutes long. I f*ing HATE THAT!

I download DivX movies. if I like them enough I buy the original DVD. if I don't like it I don't even give it the satisfaction of a $0.20 CDR nevermind a DVD-R. just my 2 cents. but if eveyone thought like that about DVD movies I guess there'd be no VCDHelp.com
Although I do love this site and all it's info. Made Vicaping TV nearly painless. Thanks folks -
it is so stupid to split a dvd to two discs
-
My feeling is that if the studio's felt that most people didn't want menus, they'd make the movie a first play. Hitting the "menu" button would bring up the menu for those who wanted it.
Then again, the average person might be too dense to figure out how to bring up the menu if it didn't appear automatically.
If you really hate menu's and extras, there's still VHS.I don't have a bad attitude...

But splitting DVD into two DVD's is not stupit some times I get movies from friend and I have about five or six movies and real ave the time to encode the movie back down to
DVD-R so I will split the movie into two disc and give them there movies back the next day I like DVDXCOPY it will split a movie at a chapter which is nice also like DVD2DVD-R great program. So I woulds say use what you like -
3 discs is like 12 bucks. For few more you could have just bought a second copy

I would be thrilled to learn where you are getting getting blank DVD discs for 80 cents each. + or - or both?

Well, I can go to this nice little site call www.vcdhelp.com, click on DVDR Media over on the left side, and find places that sell them for 80cents or less! It's a nice site, try it.

The plus are still more expensive at places like cdrdvdrmedia.com, meritline, supermediastore, and others, but you should be able to find them for $1.40 each or so. My Sony does DVD-R and DVD+R both, so I'm sticking to -R. By the time +R drops to 80 cents, the -r will be lower yet.
-
So five quid (about $7.50) is a bit expensive for DVD+R discs then?

The prices JasonK quoted are in the USA.
Can anyone comment on UK and Euro prices?I don't have a bad attitude...
