    Ok, an idiot question

Before I spend the time finding out for myself, I thought I'd ask here first. I've got an Emerson DVD/VCR combo player that plays only DVDs and audio CD's. It doesn't play VCDs or SVCDs.

My question is: If I make a CVD, with it's 1/2 DVD specs, will the player like it and play it? Or is there absolutely no way to get a "DVD-only" player to play video from a CD, regardless of the format of the video itself?

I hope you know what I'm bungling and struggling to ask here...

  2. My old DVD player used to say DVD only "this player does not play Video CDs, may result in error..." but it played them just fine without a problem. Just try it out. You don't have to encode a whole movie. Just enough to burn and see if it plays. More than likly it plays VCDs regardless to what it says.

i just bought a panasonic DVD-RP82 dvd player which states in bold print "Does Not Play SVCD" in the manual..

It plays them perfect - even up to 5000 bit rate so far , and even SAYS SVCD in the display .. (great player - plays everything - highly recomended)
    ..

so what DivXExpert says -- always try it out yourself first ..

  4. This is one of the reasons I take some many DVD Players back to the stores, just to see if it does what i need it to, and if it doesn't, back it goes. I may end up building my own DVD Player. Sorry for getting off topic.

If you want to test for sure a player, you need more than 10 discs with you in the store!
    Just count:
VCD, xVCD (vbr mpeg 1), xVCD (higher resolution) with 44100 audio
xVCD, xVCD (vbr mpeg 1), xVCD (higher resolution) with 48000 audio
SVCD, xSVCD (with VCD resolution), xSVCD (with DVD resolution)
CVD, xCVD (higher bitrate) with 44100 audio
SVCD, xSVCD (with VCD resolution), xSVCD (with DVD resolution)
CVD, xCVD (higher bitrate) with 48100 audio

    16 CDs untill now

You also probably wish to see about DVDs. So you need 2 more discs:
an XDVD with SVCD resolution files and a 1/2 D1 DVD

    18 Discs untill now

If you plan to grabb direct from Satellite DVB transmissions, you also need xDVDs with 544 X 576/480 and 522 X 576/480 (there is also 528 X 576).

Well, with a total of 21 Discs, you have checked almost everything...
And also, you have publishity! You are the reason the store salesman jumped from the top roof because you prove to his boss that he knows nothing for his sale-post or because someone must die for that "malfuctional" product he represents.

Hmmm, I must became a writer....
