Media Player is just the player, it isn't the decoder. I have used 2 different playback filters (decoders.) The Ligos one looks better playing back the video, but there's still quite a bit of artifacting, as expected with something with those low bitrates. Of course, if you split it to 2 CDs, you're doubling the bitrate, which would make it acceptable to some people. Burning to DVD @4Mbs gets into my acceptability range.

No offense, but why worry? If you are backing up a dvd you legally own, then so what if there is a little bit of pixelation in some scenes. There will always be some of that when you lower the video bitrate. Backup your movie, sit back and enjoy it. If you're too busy watching your movie from 3 feet away, then you're not enjoying it in my opinion
