  1. I need to convert a DV format AVI from NTSC to PAL.
From there I intend to create a PAL DVD to send to the UK.
(I've tried sending NTSC DVDs, but the TV is old so they play in black and white)

I read about using TMPGenc to convert MPEGs,
but it seems to me that I'll get better quality results
if I convert the original sources before I encode.

Has anyone tried these software products?

    aDVanced DV PAL/NTSC Converter http://www.dvunlimited.com/
    DVFilm Atlantis http://www.dvfilm.com/atlantis

Any good? Any others you can recommend?

Frameserve with Virtualdub to TMPGenc. Don't load direct the file to TMPGenc. Also prefer version 2.56 plus for this.
Load the pseudo-avi of virtualdub to TMPGenc, load the template of your choice and go to Settings > advance
Hit the "Inverse telecine" and select "auto". There choose what is better for your eye. I Prefer "24 flickering priority". Set enable when encoding (or whatever...)
On Settings > advance, se the Video Arrange method to "Center (keep aspect ratio)"
Also set on Settings > advance > aspect ratio to "4:3 display" (NOT 4:3 525 NTSC, choose the simply 4:3 display"
The field order for DV is usually bottom field first (fild B)

That gave me the good results. Not perfect, but way easier anything else I tried.
