When using TMPEGnc do you have to extract the audio using VirtualDub when creating both VCD and XVCD? The how to instructions at VCDhelp.com instruct you to do it for VCD but there is no mention of audio at all in the XVCD guide. Also, in the XVCD how to instructions, I'm told to select source aspect ratio 1:1 VGA or if my source is 4:3 select 4:3 525 line(NTSC) or 4:3 625(PAL) for pal. Well how do I find out what my selection would be. These may be stupid questions since I'm brand new at this.

xVCD, just like vcd usually, but the bitrates are out of spec (ie, 360 kbs audio 1700 Video or something, but still CBR is good).
Just do the same thing, but use higher bitrates, make sure it fits on VCD and your authoring proggy can use it (DVD Movie Factory for the newbie among us, I love it and they got a new demo available) and make sure that your DVD player can handle the bitrates from CD source (try a bunch with CD-RW
so if ya screw up, it's ok. And make a bunch of files at least a minute or two long that climb in bitrates (say, 1 file with 1200 CBR video, another with 1500, 2100 and so on, then author em all to a disk (maby folow every bitrate in 50s, and put it on CD-R, so you can test out all your frinds players and file reports here for us -
The method for audio extraction for VCD or XVCD are exactly the same. You only need to extract the audio if it has a VBR audio stream. Vdub will complain of this when you open the file. If vdub does not warn of a VBR audio stream, then you should be able to encode using the divx file as the video and audio source in TMPGEnc and not get any sync problems (unless of course it has ac3 audio).
The best way to check to see if the audio needs decompressing to PCM wav is to play the file in vdub. If the audio is in sync, then you should be able to encode as is. If the audio is out of sync then you need to save the wav file, if the audio is AC3, it wont play, usually giving a channel count error.
If your source is Divx, then select 1:1 VGA
The 4:3 and 16:9 options are for when the source is from 4:3 and 16:9 DVD's
